It is fair to say my graduate level education in the science of chemistry began with a fantasy – the comic book superhero “The Flash.”  When a bolt of lightning struck the laboratory chemist Barry Allen was working in, bathing him in an irreproducible mixture of substances and massive electrical discharge he gained the physics defying power of super speed.  (There were a number of other chemistry-based superheroes – Hourman, Metamorpho, even the Metal Men to some extent, but The Flash was the guy I loved.)  Once my study of chemistry actually began for several years I knew, just knew that once I got through this elementary stuff, I’d get to the stuff that might get me where I wanted to be.  But then high school and my first class called “chemistry,” as opposed to the independent reading I had been doing, and my super-speed dreams were quickly dashed, but replaced by a fascination with the actual, real science.
