The pandemic raised statistical obscuration from an occasionally practiced form of spin to an art form used to justify government overreach on levels previously unimagined in the United States. Numbers were sliced, chopped, “normalized,” and otherwise processed to make things look at bad as possible. We, the public, were deemed too stupid to possibly deal with raw numbers or simple counts. It will be interesting to watch this art form develop in the wake of the Dobbs decision.
