This lovely carol dates back to the middle ages, and was incorporated into the nativity scenes at the mystery plays set in Coventry, representing the women of Bethlehem singing a lament in the form over their young babies who were soon to be massacred by Herod.
The Coventry Carol was sung and on Christmas Day in the bombed out ruins of the Cathedral in the aftermath of the blitz on Coventry in 1940. The broadcast went out right across the British Empire.
Apart from being a beautiful song in its own right, the Coventry Carol makes a powerful starting point to pray for those who have lost young ones and family members. There are so many in so many parts of the world for whom that is only too true. Why not ask the Lord to lead you somewhere with this music, and the brief improvisation that follows it?
