Ritual abounds in death, offering a space to process, acknowledge and mourn. In this opening chapter of Divinatory Strategies, artists Rubiane Maia, Daniella Valz Gen and Soojin Chang discuss practices of channelling, their ways of working with and through memory, ancestral healing and communion, belonging, and the kinship between spiritual practitioners and artists. Emerging from these conversations, hosted by Joseph Morgan Schofield, is an articulation of ritual/art as something which has a vital and affirming function in dealing with human experiences of dislocation, alienation and grief.

Intention is a crucial facet of ritual. Building on the idea of ritual as a technology which produces transformation, in this chapter artists Es Morgan and Teo Ala-Ruona speak with Joseph about the ways in which they have used ritual-performance-art to discover their desires, and work with intention as they move towards the horizon of transition. Ritual is alive, actively changing the very conditions of living.

How does life emerge from matter? How do we account for conscious awareness and empathy? What constitutes cognition, choice and purposeful behaviour with respect to machines, molecular processes, and organisms? Can art help to reposition our relationship to non-human nature and generate insights into the real by enabling us to become animal, plant or machine? To mark the end of his Mark Tanner Sculpture Award exhibition ‘Evolutionary Love’ at Standpoint Gallery, Dean Kenning was in conversation with the artist Lindsay Seers to delve into some of these questions and the themes which have informed Kenning’s sensory, crawling automatons. In this recorded talk, they consider how artistic approaches and methods can engage with and bring new perspectives to models of reality in neuroscience, fundamental physics and biology. With particular reference to the semiotics of C.S Peirce and the process philosophy of Henri Bergson, they question how their amateur passions and collaborations inspire the growth of new artistic forms and envisage points of continuity across the realms of artistic and scientific research. _____

Dean Kenning is a London-born artist, writer, educator and post-doctoral researcher at Kingston School of Art. Through his kinetic and sound sculptures, videos and diagrams he employs DIY, allegorical and autodidactic methods and modes of representation to engender visceral, uncanny and humorous encounters, to bring dumb matter to ‘life’, and to explore political, philosophical and scientific material. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Matt's Gallery, Beaconsfield and Piper Keys, and he has published articles in journals including Third Text, Art Monthly and Journal of Visual Art Practice.
Lindsay Seers works in London and lives on the Isle of Sheppey. Her persistent themes of hallucination, schizophrenia, biological chimerism, gender politics and the legacy of colonialism are formed through biography as a framework for larger social, political narratives and in which human consciousness seems to be the fundamental sticking point for humankind to effectively evolve. She has shown large scale works at the Venice Biennale, Hayward Gallery, Tate Triennial and Baltic amongst many others. Her works are in a number of collections including Tate collection, Arts Council collection, Artangel collection, collection of MONA, Tasmania and MTA Collection, Lebanon.

As part of The Politics of Pleasure Weruzo Programme, led by Chinasa Chukwu, Creative Director of fashion brand Weruzo. Oyelade’s essay resists the reductive reading that runs girls film’s protagonists can only exercise power using their bodies. She uses ‘Girls Cot’ as a case study for her analysis of this to examine the power relations between the male ‘sugar daddies’, who are the traditional holders of power and the runs girls in the movie who are also reclaiming power back for themselves.
As part of The Politics of Pleasure Weruzo Programme, led by Chinasa Chukwu, Creative Director of fashion brand Weruzo. Mehri's essay interrogates the joys and critical failures of idolising and comparing ourselves to prominent leading black womxn in politics/popular culture, and their relation to the lack of agency that characterises the lives of so many working-class Black womxn.
Writer and blogger Kiyémis introduces Amandine Gay's Afro-feminist documentary Speak Up at the Fugitive Feminism season.
Speak Up intertwines the personal narratives of a group of French women of African descent as they converse about what it means to be a woman today and belong to the Afro community.

Speak Up intertwines the personal narratives of a group of French women of African descent as they converse about what it means to be a woman today and belong to the Afro community.
In 1851, Sojourner Truth delivered her now iconic speech ‘Ain't I a Woman?’ at the Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. Truth's speech is one of the earliest recorded instances of intersectionality. She demanded the recognition of Black women as women and demonstrated how being positioned at the intersection of race and gender constitutes a double jeopardy which undermines Black women's claims to justice and equality.
In 2018, Black women are still making remarkably similar claims for recognition and respect as women. In this talk, Akwugo Emejulu draws on the work of Black radical theorists such as Saidiya Hartman, Hortense Spillers, Stefano Harney, Fred Moten and Tina Campt to explore the impossibility of Black women's claims to and inclusion in ‘womanhood’, and examines the implications this has for contemporary Black feminist politics. Akwugo Emejulu argues that Black feminism is fundamentally destabilised by these analyses but can be reconstructed through different ontological and affective relations of the self, which she names ‘fugitive feminism.’
Introducing BOOTH: Salon, a showcase of rising female filmmakers. Taking inspiration from the salons of the 16th century where women led gatherings to discuss the arts and exchange ideas, BOOTH: Salon is a screening of members' films followed by an open conversation led by BOOTH’s founder Skyla van der Pols with filmmakers: Georgi-Banks Davies, Tash Tung, Esmé Hicks, Noémi Varga and Garfield producer Natasha Moses.

Marking the centennial anniversary of the Soviet Revolution, media theorist Franco 'Bifo' Berardi introduces via video call the international premiere of the new documentary 'Comunismo Futuro'.
The screening is followed by a Q&A with director Andrea Gropplero and journalist Ash Sarkar.
For the first event of the In formation summer season, Jan-Werner Müller presents a talk asking what populism actually is and what might be problematic about it for democracy, with a following response and audience discussion led by journalist Ash Sarkar.
Müller addresses the question of whether right-wing populism should be opposed with left-wing populism and asks what populists actually do when they gain power. He suggests a number of cultural strategies for engaging with populist parties and movements.

Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery (2002-2015), curated Robert Mapplethorpe's first solo exhibition at the ICA in 1983. Alison Jacques has represented Robert Mapplethorpe's estate in the UK since 1999.

Elie Ayache, former options trader and writer on the philosophy of contingency and technologies of derivative pricing, and artist Ami Clarke in discussion.
Through the publication of her 'writing' (as a direct copy) Chapter 4 of Ayache’s influential book The Blank Swan: The End of Probability, Ami Clarke and Elie Ayache discuss the contingency of writing, as equivalent to pricing in the market. They explore how Jorge Louis Borges' story of Pierre Menard; Author of the Quixote, central to Ayache’s philosophy, differs from previous ideas of copying and appropriation, to repeat the contingency of the text.

Film locations historian Roland-Francois Lack offers an account of two lost films from early cinema made by electrical engineer and pioneering film maker Robert Paul – On a Runaway Motor Car through Piccadilly Circus, and Sensational Fire Engine Collision (both c.1900).
For the former, Paul attached a camera to a car in order to stage a high speed 'phantom ride' car chase through Piccadilly Circus, the latter film involved the spectacular crashing of a fire engine close to Marble Arch.

Marking the launch of the publication You Are Here: Art After the Internet, this panel discussion explores both the effects and affects of the Internet on contemporary artistic practices. A passionate, poetic documentary about the nature of happiness. Filmed in Mexico over three days, for just £10, it begins as a film about the soviet director Sergei Eisenstein, and then, using his ideas, opens up to look at memory, landscape and the pleasures of walking. It is a personal film and aims to be very cinematic, using three visual dream sequences, and the music of PJ Harvey, Simon Fisher Turner, Johnny Cash and Bernard Hermann. The film draws from a range of filmmakers and writers – principally Chris Marker, but also Virginia Woolf, Frank O’Hara and others – but aims to touch on themes that are relevant to a wide range of people – where joy comes from, the emotions involved with travel and homecoming, and the nature of solitude.

In anticipation of her inclusion in the exhibition Keep Your Timber Limber (Works on Paper), artist Judith Bernstein discusses her work and practice with the exhibition curator Sarah McCrory.
Born in 1942 in Newark, New Jersey, Judith Bernstein has lived and worked in New York city since 1967. Exhibiting at Mitchell Algus Gallery, New York (2008), The Box, Los Angeles (2009 and 2011), and Alex Zachary, New York (2010).
Bernstein was a founding member of A.I.R. Gallery (the first gallery devoted to showing female artists) where she had her first solo exhibition in 1973. She was an early member of many art and activist organisations including Guerilla Girls, Art Workers' Coalition, and Fight Censorship.

In light of the suicide of programmer, writer and internet activist Aaron Swartz, we hosted an informal discussion focussing on his 2008 Guerilla Open Access Manifesto as part of the Quickfire series of talks.
Although conversations surrounding open source, digital rights, intellectual property, and copyright spread far beyond Swartz and his actions, his untimely death at the age of 26 highlights an increasingly important debate and the fact that, although masked by reams of data and lines of code, digital activism begins with individuals.
Rather than a memorial or tribute, this event is a chance to draw attention to the complexity of policy surrounding the collection and distribution of information online by which, whether we choose to acknowledge it or not, we are all affected. By reflecting on Swartz’s manifesto five years after he wrote it, the talk will be an opportunity to consider his call to arms in the current context and explore the ways in which his invitation to act might be accepted.
Invited speakers are artist Marysia Lewandowska, Associate Editor of Wired.co.uk Olivia Solon, and Jim Killock, Executive Director of Open Rights Group.

On August 17th 2012, the three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot were convicted of hooliganism and jailed for two years after staging an anti-Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral.
Broadcaster and art lawyer Mark Stephens will be in conversation with Index on Censorship CEO Kirsty Hughes and independent curator and art historian Nadim Samman to review the recent Pussy Riot case and its impact on contemporary culture. The panel will also address the consequences in relation to artists’ freedom of speech as well as discussing the complexities of the legal case, alongside other similar controversial incidents relating to artists’ actions.
Mark Stephens is a solicitor specialising in artlaw and free expression. He has undertaken some of the highest profile cases, he also had the first UK law firm in the Soviet Union following perestroika and glasnost.
Kirsty Hughes has worked for leading international thinktanks, NGOs and international organisations including Chatham House, Oxfam and the European Commission and written on international politics for a range of national and international media outlets. She is a passionate advocate for freedom of expression and has recently been appointed as the Chief executive of Index.
Nadim Samman is a curator and art historian based in London and Berlin. He has curated numerous exhibitions featuring contemporary Russian artists in the UK. He has written for international publications and in 2012 he curated the 4th Marrakech Biennale with Carson Chan.

CLOCKWORK : BROKEN is a short, concise composition following the theme of an old clockwork that decicively structures time whilst getting messed up with clouds of memories of its own sound material.
Acoustically, CLOCKWORK : BROKEN consists of glass, all the sound material was recorded by the artists themselves. With an axe they systematically cut Christmas tree balls as well as mirrors and the complete stock of glasses from a former restaurant. Using three directional microphones they recorded the breaking, fall and impact of the glass on the ground.
HENRY KOCH (DE), composer and musician. Born 1960 in Dresden, studied 1982-1987 at HfM "Carl-Maria v. Weber" in Dresden composition, electronic music and clarinet. Freelanced since 1991, living and working in Rotterdam, London, Dresden, he settled in Berlin in 2003. Composing included solo-, chamber and orchestral pieces as well as electronic music; solowork as well as cooperations with various international artists and ensembles.
ANKE ECKARDT (DE), sound and media artist. Born in 1976 in Dresden, since 1994 she lives and works in Berlin. Since 2008 her work encompasses sculptures, installations as well as a theoretical discourse on the topic of the phenomenology of sounds. She presents her work internationally. For her sculptures and installations she uses sound (including ultrasound and infrasound) in combination with other media/materials such as moving light and water for building large-scale works of a rich metaphoric radiance.

The influences of the locale (translated by Owen Martell)
The propagation of sound in a locale is a complex vibratory / undulatory phenomenon which involves acoustic measurement just as much as it involves aesthetic appreciation. How to account for the size of things by their sonic properties? Beyond technical protocol, listening becomes tied up in the surfaces of the world. Recordings, sonic readings, open out into a musical form which reactivates a perception of that which surrounds us, whether visible or not; a reinjection.
Thus, for twenty years or so, my musical practice has been a series of experimentations / improvisations with this sonic locale. As it passes through my microphones, the site of the survey – everyday life – is transformed into a site of play. The dimensions of the real world generate sonic representations whose proportions found another perspective on the world.
