Bylong's population dwindled after a coal mine bought up family farms, the school, the general store and the Catholic church. Over a decade the Korean coal company KEPCO now owns 13 hectares of the valley a couple of hours west of Newcastle. But the mine was rejected and three appeals dismissed. KEPCO continues to exhaust all avenues to get the mine greenlit, but the community, what's left of it, wants their valley back. They want the valley's agricultural potential realised.
