The dynamic between state premiers somewhat overshadowed the first National Cabinet meeting under new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday.

Mark McGowan was addressing journalists in Canberra when NSW counterpart and adversary Dominic Perrottet began fielding questions from reporters just metres away, leaving the WA premier bemused and apologising for the "distraction".

Nine Radio's national political editor Michael Pachi told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings that while the GST, skilled worker shortage and health funding arrangements led the official agenda, Albanese was equally focused on ensuring harmony between state leaders after several recent public spats.
