Western Power's changes earlier this year applies to home builds or replacements for existing mains supply in rural WA and require a circuit breaker attached to the power supply if more than 32 amps are used at any one time.

Electrical contractor and Real Steel Electrics owner Ian Willis told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the rule changes for rural properties would prove problematic, particularly as many rural property owners require water pumps.

"Every time a pump starts, it draws a lot of current for a very short period of time... that might just take it over the limit... if someone goes shopping and comes back, their power's tripped out, and all of a sudden their freezer has defrosted," he said.

"It's just not fair, it's un-Australian." 

The average kettle uses about 10 amps, while air-conditioners have a current draw of 25 amps.
