According to the Wits Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit (Wits VIDA), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of hospitalisation and sometimes even death of children under the age of five, and even more so in infants younger than six months. In response, researchers at Wits VIDA embarked on a trial to find out what impact administering Pfizer’s Bivalent Prefusion F Vaccine would have on unborn babies. They found that the vaccine is safe and actually reduces the risk of severe RSV-related infections by 82% in infants through to when they are six months old.
