Since his address to a colloquium by the Human Sciences Research Council, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has come under fire after he said Parliament has not acted on the state capture recommendations he tabled when he was chairperson of the commission. Chief Justice Zondo is also reported to have said that if another group of people attempted to capture the state, they would succeed because parliament would again fail to stop them. While the official opposition agreed with the chief justice, the ANC’s Fikile Mbalula says judges are not demigods and should respect the separation of powers because he has concluded his part in the commission. Parliament speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula along with the National Council of Provinces Chairperson Amos Masondo, have since called for a meeting with Chief Justice Zondo following the remarks. In this conversation we want to get to the bottom of the uproar, whether it is justified and assess the issue of the separation of powers.
