In July, the Democratic Alliance (DA) announced that about six political parties would form a so-called “Moonshot Pact” in hopes of unseating the ANC at next year’s general elections. The multiparty pact which includes the DA, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Action SA, Freedom Front Plus, the United Independent Movement and the Spectrum National Party, indicated in a statement that the 2024 elections present an opportunity to elect a new government that “can steer the country out of multiple crises”. Associate professor at Wits University’s School of Governance, Professor William Gumede, was appointed to independently chair the national convention which take place on the 16th and 17th of August. He joins us now to tell us more about the aim of the convention as well as how this coalition government can possibly work in the South African context.         Professor William Gumede, Chair of the Multiparty Convention and Associate Professor at Wits University joins Thoriso Maloka for the conversation.
