PDF Manuscript: Proverbs - Everyday Wisdom - Disaster and Delight
We’re going to discuss one of those topics that seems to be talked about everywhere these days, except in church. Which means we probably need to be talking about it a whole lot more. As we continue in our study of Proverbs, chapter 5 presents us with a clear and forthright discussion of sex. And if you’ve read the Bible, you know that God is not silent when it comes to this topic. In fact, it would be impossible for us to do justice to the book of Proverbs and not talk about sex. Large portions of chapters5, 6, and 7 talk about sex. Which means two things: One, you can’t talk about how to live wisely in this world without addressing sex. Two, there is no area of life that God hasn’t spoken into—even those we think are most hidden.
Our study this morning is only going to profitable if we recognize this: this is a part of life that Christians don’t always handle very well. I could give you the statistics that show pornography among both men and women is at the level of a global health crisis (has skyrocketed since Covid-19). I could give you statistics about adultery, premarital sex, and divorce rates. But I’m not going to, because you already know that sexual sin is pervasive. Some of you are struggling with it currently, others of you have gone through it, and we all know lives that have experienced devastation because of it. We desperately need the wisdom of God when it comes to sex. Let’s see what he has to say about it.
