PDF Sermon Manuscript: Proverbs - Everyday Wisdom - Enticement

Pastor Ben asked me to join this sermon series on the book of Proverbs and I was delighted. I love the book of Proverbs. In fact, it’s funny, as a family we’re reading through the book of Proverbs right now in our family Bible time. Proverbs is such a down-to-earth, practical book. There is so much great wisdom here for real-life stuff that we all face. And not only that. Not only is there helpful, everyday wisdom, but these Proverbs also point us to the gospel. I can’t tell you how many times during family Bible time, we read a Proverb and start discussing it, and we find ourselves talking about Jesus and the gospel and salvation and the Holy Spirit. The book of Proverbs is beautiful and powerful and life-changing.

Our passage for today is Proverbs 1:8-19. Here’s the main idea of this section: wisdom helps us resist the enticement of sin.

Remember last week Pastor Ben said that wisdom is the ability to live life skillfully from God’s point of view. Now this week we going to look at how God wants us to live skillfully in one particular area of life, and that’s the area of enticement to sin, temptation to sin. Proverbs gives us wisdom to help us resist the enticement of sin. Now just to make sure we’re all on the same page, do you know what I’m talking about when I say the enticement of sin? I’m talking about the pull toward sin, the allure of sin, the temptation to sin. Have you felt that in the past week? In the past hour? I know I have. And I desperately need wisdom to resist the enticement of sin. One of the best ways to get our brains around this idea of temptation is to think back to the Garden of Eden.
