RadioRotaryinterviews Laura Lane, Poughkeepsie program coordinator for Literacy Connectionsof the Hudson Valley. Literacy Connections uses a state-approved tutoring programwith trained volunteers to help adults gain reading skills and to tutor immigrantswho have poor or no English. Theservices of Literary Connections are free; the organization is supported bydonations from individuals, foundations, and government agencies. Althoughthe program works all year long, the highlight of the year comes with the annualSpelling Bee at Marist College, a competition for high-school students andadults; sponsors for the Spelling Bee contribute to the funds that has kept theprogram going more than 45 years. Functional illiteracy is more than justinability to read words--literacyis the ability to understand, evaluate, use, and engage with written texts in ways enabling a person to participate insociety, achieve that person’s goals, and develop his or her knowledge andpotential. It includes the skills neededto fill out forms and read instructions, not just to read or write andunderstand a sentence.
