How do we break the poverty cycle? Impoverished households can oftentimes have no father figure, a parent who works multiple jobs, lack of support at home with education, and a host of other issues. Children within these households can be exposed to and affected by situations like drugs, violence, teen pregnancy, and the absence of positive role models.
It becomes extremely difficult to set children up for higher educational opportunities, strong values, morals, and well paying jobs. When confronted with these circumstances where can families go for help?
The Pearson Foundation in Pearl Mississippi was created specifically to help kids within these difficult lifestyles. We were able to visit the foundation and speak with the executive director, Jarvis Ward.
The Pearson Foundation provides many services for children in elementary school up through their high school years. Including: mentorship, tutoring, leadership programs/retreats, summer reading institutes, parenting/relationship classes and provides scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Since their revamp in 2014 (when Jarvis joined the Pearson team) every student involved in their tutoring program has graduated from high school.
