Newstalk ZB's Night Host Marcus Lush felt the 5.9 magnitude earthquake from his Invercargill studio.
The quake struck 40km north of Te Anau at 9.14pm this evening at a depth of 53km.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has assessed the quake and says strong currents are possible on the West Coast of the South Island from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point.
It has downgraded its tsunami warning to an advisory.

A longstanding debate has emerged once more: should you return your shopping trolley when you’re done with it?
An LA based clinical and forensic psychologist shared her answer on social media, telling viewers that she doesn’t return her trolley and they can judge her all they want.
"I’m not getting my groceries into the car, getting my children into the car and then leaving them in the car to go return the cart. So if you’re going to give me a dirty look, f*** off."
Marcus Lush weighed in on the debate, saying that while some might be “all rageful” that others abandon their trolleys, he’s not so set in stone.
“I reckon the supermarkets are extorting us so much with money that if they want to pay someone to go and get the trolleys and make the whole day easier for us, we’re having to check out ourselves, if they want to return the trolley, good on them.”
He personally doesn’t abandon the trolley, instead pushing it from a bit closer and hoping it slots in neatly, but he doesn’t have a problem with others leaving them.
“That car park space, it is part of the supermarket,” he continued.
“They should manage it.”
The combination of high costs and a transition to more self-service operations is driving this thought, as customers are now seemingly responsible for every part of the operation.
“There is no customer service, so if one small way of getting back is just leaving your trolley akimbo by the car so they put it back, I don’t have a problem with that.”

The concept of nicotine pouches has seen a mixed response from the public and experts alike.
Posts have been making the rounds on social media, influencers promoting flavoured products such as “zyn”, “buff”, and “ace” as a method to quit smoking and vaping.
Public health experts are concerned, Sydney University’s Becky Freeman saying that the “wellness” influencers who promote these products are often unclear that its sponsored content.
Freeman said that the pouches are being pushed without reliable knowledge as to what their benefits are.
On the other hand, Action for Smokefree sees the pouches as another tool in the toolbox for helping kiwis kick their smoking habits.
Director Ben Youdan says there’s a place for more products to get people off of the most harmful nicotine product: the cigarette.
The sale of nicotine pouches was banned in New Zealand by the Labour Government in 2020, but importing from overseas remains legal as long as they are not sold on.
Nicotine pouches consist of a small mesh bag of vegetable powder, over which concentrated nicotine was dripped. They were banned alongside snus, a similar product containing tobacco.
Dylan, a caller on Newstalk ZB’s Marcus Lush Nights, agrees with the second opinion, saying that by recommending them the pouches, he got three full-time smokers to quit.
He’s been using pouches for three to four and a half years and told Marcus Lush that these have probably been the best thing for his smoking addiction.
“I went from smoking to vaping, and then to these just because vaping is not... I don’t think it’s a good thing.”
In the past, Dylan was able to get the nicotine pouches from his local dairy, but due to the ban now has to import them from Sweden.
While he used the pouches to ween himself off smoking and vaping, he revealed that he’s happy with his continued use of the pouches.
“One day, if I feel the need to get off it, I can, but yeah, at this stage I’m quite happy taking them.”

The mother of one of the victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks has a simple message are shocked by an early draft script of a film based on the attacks: "No".
Newshub received a leaked script of 'They Are Us' and say the first 17 pages are focussed on the attack.
The project, described as following the week after March 15, has faced strong criticism and prompted a petition to stop it being made.
Janna Ezat lost her son Hussein Al-Umari in the attack when in court forgave the terrorist, saying "I decided to forgive you Mr Tarrant because I don't have hate … I have no choice."
Speaking to Marcus Lush, Ezat says that she is still suffering from the tragedy - including that she is suffering from anxiety and is having to move to Auckland to get away from Christchurch.
However, she says that someone from production called her, trying to get her approval to be included in the film.
"From this point, they told me we will write about your son because he is a hero, and we will write about you because you are a forgiver."
Ezat says that her "son's blood is not cheap", and she does want the movie to go ahead and the producers should respect that decision.
"For me, the scenes of March will happen again and again."
"We are the victims. We are the families. They can't do things on behalf of us that we are not expecting. It's a crime."

New Zealanders' opinions are split when it comes to the dress code of MPs in Parliament.
At the time of writing, more than 3,200 people had voted in an informal poll on the Herald's Facebook page on whether ties should remain compulsory.
Of those 3,200 people, 45 per cent believe MPs should continue wearing ties, while 55 per cent don't think ties need to remain part of the Beehive's dress code.
Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi was today booted out of Parliament after a dress code scuffle with Speaker Trevor Mallard.
Waititi refused to wear a tie, which he has described as a "colonial noose".
Late last year, Waititi was warned that he faced being ejected from the House if he did not wear a tie, after refusing to wear one, and in his maiden speech to Parliament he said in te reo: "Take the noose from around my neck so that I may sing my song."
In the comments on the informal Facebook poll, many believed the tie is a sign of respect for the role, while other Kiwis agreed that the dress code is outdated and unnecessary, as it is no reflection on an MP's professionalism.
"Clothes don't dictate professionalism. The most unprofessional person in the world doesn't suddenly become the best the second they put on a suit. As long as the work is done and your actually clothed, then why should it matter? It's like trying to say women in offices just wear skirts and heels. Archaic and not needed," someone commented.
"Think this is a red herring to take the heat out of the fact Mr Mallard has cost 'you me taxpayer' over $300,000 in legal bills and compensation," one person commented. "But as a side issue the majority of MPs' voted to keep ties as part of the dress code."
"Yes and they should be debating and making laws on things other than what they wear in Parliament!! We are paying for this," someone else said.
Many expressed the idea that the clothing is not important, as long as MPs represent the interests of their people.
"As long as the work gets done, I couldn't care less if they were in stubbies and red bands," one person said.
"I don't care just as long as they're doing their jobs," another Facebook user agreed.
"Ties are archaic and should not be compulsory. Taonga are a cultural heritage explicitly protected by our founding document te Tiriti o Waitangi," someone else said.
A number of Kiwis argued that if MPs drop their dress code, it might be time to rethink school uniforms as well.
"If they can relax their dress code rules my kids would like their state schools to relax their uniform rules. Smart casual will work," a Facebook user commented.
After Steve and Marcus clashed on the safety of the conditionally-approved Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, the conversation has turned to the campaign to inform and educate the New Zealand public ahead of the mass rollout later this year.

Fire crews in Christchurch are battling a substantial fire on the hillside in the Hillsborough area.
Appliances from across Christchurch, including Governors Bay have been called in to help. A Christchurch City command unit has also been set up on Port Hills Road.
A Port Hills resident near the scene of this evening's scrub fire says the blaze appears to be getting smaller.
Witnesses told Marcus Lush the fire is about a kilometre in width and there are a lot of crews fighting the flames, and that there are houses in the vicinity.

Green Party MP and spokesperson for drug reform Chloe Swarbrick joined Marcus Lush for a marathon four-hour session of talkback to discuss the referendum that will gauge the public's support on whether the recreational use of cannabis should become legal.
Kiwis will vote on the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill alongside this year's election.
The Bill's purpose is to eliminate the legal supply of cannabis, and provide access to legal cannabis, that meets quality and potency requirements.
Swarbrick told Marcus Lush it's important to note this referendum isn't about whether you like, use or support cannabis.
"This is referendum is about the kind of legal framework that we have in response to cannabis, which exists regardless of whether you vote no or yes."
She says the cannabis referendum would enable the Government to implement a similar control mechanism to Smokefree 2025. That campaign seesthe Government is working to control the amount of tobacco purchased, put educational information out, and investing in products to quit smoking.
Swarbrick says the Government want to do the same with cannabis.
"We have the opportunity to do all those same things when it comes to cannabis. Right now, we have no control."
She hopes the experience of the Covid-19 lockdown, and slowing down, helps people look into the issue differently.
"But also perhaps recognise things from a community and compassionate perspective would have enabled more people to see the benefit of voting yes."
Swarbrick also took calls from listeners to answer their questions about the referendum.

Marcus Lush has once again had a colourful clash with a caller on Māori names, after caller Judith raised concerns about albatross names.
Starting off the call by saying "I just want to probably change subjects because I haven't been listening," Judith went on to ask about the competition to choose the names for baby albatrosses.
"I'm not at all racist, but I don't know why the albatross chicks have to be called a Māori name all the time," with Judith suggesting other names, such as Reg or Bob.
Lush responded saying that people send in names they think are best, and found the judging criteria, which lists relevance, originality and creativity.
"Do you think Bob would fit in with that criteria?" Lush asked, but Judith kept pushing her point in a 14 minute back and forth, to the delight of callers.

Two friends have been reconnected after nearly 50 years, because they were both listening to the Marcus Lush Nights show.
Marcus mentioned the passing of Millie Small, and heard from a few callers who had attended concerts of hers in New Zealand in the 1960s.
One caller, Don, said he went to her show in Greymouth with an older friend of his, Parris Heath, and went backstage after the show as Parris interviewed Millie for the local newspaper.
A couple of hours later, after thinking he had heard himself be mentioned on the radio, Parris rang Marcus to confirm the story.

Last night, Marcus Lush took a call from one listener asking when the Coronation Street episodes that air in the afternoon will catch up with the episodes that air at night.
For a reminder: last year, TVNZ 1 skipped ahead 18 months so that New Zealand would be just one week behind the UK. The episodes that had been airing in the evenings moved to the afternoons, giving audiences two different timelines.
Those afternoon episodes have slowly been catching up, but fans are wondering when exactly the two timelines will become one again.

The search for Lucas the cavoodle, who'd been missing in bush near Wainuiomata since last Friday is over.
The dog was found on a public street some way from where members of the local community who'd raised thousands of dollars to fund the search had been looking.
Caller Campbell told Marcus Lush he was involved in the search.
He says the dog covered a lot of territory to get to where he was found.
"No one can believe how he got over to the spot, given the size of him and the steepness of the terrain, so we really are quite amazed at where he ended up."

It’s not often you get the competition ringing up, but that was exactly what Marcus Lush had last night.
Expecting to get a caller interested in discussing Jono and Ben, Marcus instead got the comedians themselves phoning in.
The pair were up on a billboard promoting their latest burger venture, and phoned up to get involved in the night’s chat.
The pair shared their joy for Marcus’ show, while he called them up on stealing his ideas.

It’s hard for me to really say too much about Merv Smith.
I would say that for a long time, and certainly probably forever, he was the biggest name in radio
He dominated breakfast. It was the whole cliche ‘the King of the Cornies’.
Merv Smith was that, and probably had a bigger market share than anyone’s ever had in radio. A great voice, and an absolute broadcasting legend.
That name is bandied around somehwat recklessly to describe people’s career, but certainly when it comes to boradcasting legends Merv Smith would be right there at the very top.
Pretty much in his days when he was doing radio, when he was dominating everyone in the breakfast, he wasn’t on the big money either. In those days it was pretty much the role of a public servant was the job of being a radio announcer.
That was Merv Smith, and he dominated for a long, long time.
He did breakfast radio from 1961 through until when Paul Holmes came on. Merv Smith went from 61 to just shy of 1990.
Probably no one’s role as a breakfast host has been as distinguished or successful or as lengthy.
I don’t know how big he was outside of Auckland. I think the Earlybird was on before some of the breakfasts on the ZB network outside of Auckland, some people might remember him for the kid’s show on the weekends.
The other thing about Merv Smith too was he was very much a railway man. He was very involved in railways and restorations. His two loves were radio and the railway, probably three with country music. I met him once when I was making a railway documentary.
People that work in radio, they don’t always live forever. Plenty die young, but when you look at Merv Smith. He must have had 30 years of retirement. It was a long, long time.
