The long dark NZ Autumn and Winter of 2019.Aotearoa means Land of the Long White Cloud and we live up to that with high % cloud cover, including fog and only handful of sunny days.We may be on track for what may be the lowest recorded sunshine hours whilst I've been off-grid relying on solar power.
Without much sunshine, the back up generator was used. I talk about the frequency of use, expense, a few instances that occurred.

This marks the 60th episode of the Sunshine & PowerCuts Podcast.In the early days, there were a few bonus episodes due to the excitement for this creative journey and gratitude for the support I received early on.

Naturally, at the heart of Sunshine & PowerCuts is connections.Being connected to nature as a resource for generating both electrical power and for our own health and empowerment. When we face challenges or experience powercuts (lost connections) in life, we need to reconnect, re-sync and recharge. And along our journeys we connect with resources and people that help us and which we are truly grateful for and they are an integral part of our journey of learning about ourselves and the world around us.Bringing people together to shine a light on and share those experiences is powerful.

In this Episode:I share a brief update on the weather and solar power, the dry grass meant that hay was able to be made - but also that a lot of hay was able to be made...Sheep have been shorn, and with March 2019 approaching, it brings the Golden Shears - the national sheep shearing competition and so I refer back to the NZ Film directed by Jack Nicholl called She Shears which you can find out more about at https://www.sheshears.com/I attended one of the first screenings back in August 2018 and was able to meet Jack and I think it's a film worth checking out if you are able to.

We look forward to connecting with you in the live chat during the event.From this episode:We've had a heat wave with temperatures in excess of 33C inside my house, even with all the doors and windows open hoping to catch a breeze.The spa pool has been in use to cool down, and I briefly mention the different ways we've tried to heat the water up to take the chill off - because with the air temperature being so hot and no heating element for the pool, it makes it easier to get in when the difference is not so vast.At the January Wellington Podcast Brunch Club meetup, one of the members asked me about Stirling Engines.There's a lot to know about Stirling Engines so I encourage you to look into it, if you aren't already familiar.Correction: in the episode I say that there is "fluid of gas" - what I mean is that there is fluidity or movement of the gas between a hot region and cold region. Also the heat and cold are applied externally to the closed system.

Before we begin, think about what 'refreshment' means to you.
Refreshment can be starting again, when we experience a change, rest and find renewed strength and energy.
We look at themes of refreshment: the natural cycle of daily rhythms, and the seasons, of love, solitude, silence, of being refreshed by water and nourishment, by being in gratitude and by getting fresh air, some space and some perspective.
And by taking notice of nature to be refreshed by being in awe of the beauty it beholds.

An ampere is a unit of measure of the rate of electron flow or current in an electrical conductor. Kilowatt hour (kWh) is a unit of energy equal to 3.6 megajoules. If energy is transmitted or used at a constant rate (power) over a period of time, the total energy in kilowatt hours is equal to the power in kilowatts multiplied by the time in hours. Embark on a journey [em]powered by nature. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Notes from this episode: Internet Connection Speeds - the rate in megabits per second (Mbps) at which data is able to be downloaded from the internet to your computer and data is able to be uploaded from your computer to the internet. The faster the speed the faster the data is transferred, allowing for smoother livestreams for example. My original connection speed was 5Mbps down, 1Mbps up - which led to stability issues whilst connecting via video and livestreaming. The upgraded speed for the Sunshine Summit was 30Mbps down, 5Mbps up - which allowed the livestreams to go ahead. The reason the speeds were taken away at the end of August according to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) was due to the tower the signal was coming from hadn't been upgraded to be able to cope with sending data that fast wirelessly.

PowEp002 - Dinner in the Dark The second PowerCut Episode - An Off-Grid Dinner in the Dark In this episode I have an anecdote from an Off Grid dinner party I hosted. This week the weather wasn't great and we had an intense lightening storm. We are thinking of all those affected by the Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. I also caught and had to recover from a cold. So this episode was scripted whilst I was feeling less than energized, my attitude was as rubbish as the weather and I was waiting for dinner to cook in / on the Wagener Fairburn woodfire oven - so I may have become a little Hangry - Hungry / Angry. PowEp001 - Brief Intro into our Off Grid System In the first of the PowerCut episodes of the podcast a brief introduction to our Off Grid System is given. ~~~ DISCLAIMER ~~~ Every Off Grid system and experience is going to be unique. The components we have in our system were selected by us to suit our budget and purpose. Our challenges partly relate to our system not being large enough to comfortably sustain a modern home of our size and the number of people that dwell there. This is due to the fact that we have been building up our system over time since we went fully Off-Grid in 2011.
We decided to go off-grid because the cost to connect to the grid and get power to our site was too expensive. We have a standard 3 bedroom home with a small office and attached garage, the entire house is fully insulated, we have double glazed windows, an open plan kitchen, dining and living area, a main bathroom, a separate W/C and the master bedroom features an en suite. There are a multitude of alternative setups you could have, however this is what we are working with. We do not offer advice on setting up Off Grid Systems, or have an affiliation with any of the suppliers mentioned below. Additional Notes / Tech Specifications to the Podcast: 12 Solar Panels - 1 @ 190 watts, 11 @ 200 watts 16 x 225AH 6V Crown wet cell batteries wired in series for a 24V system - 4 batteries to each series. Our house runs on the NZ Standard of 230/240V AC (50Hz) not on DC power.
The Outback components are the: Regulator / Charge Controller - is the 80amp FLEXMax 80 A 3kW Inverter Charger - Vented GVFX3024E (50Hz)
*( If you follow the link you will notice that our model of inverter / charger has been discontinued and the new version can be found here : VFXR3024E ) We have the MATE for the FLEXMax80 in our main living/dining area for easy access to monitor the power and from there we can turn the generator on when required. The Generator we have is a 6kVA Diesel Silent Generator. Wagener Fairburn Woodrange - we have the model in the image featured at the top of the page: The 'Wagener Fairburn on legs' The hot water cylinder connected to the wetback has the 3kW element and I will need to confirm the total capacity.
The Fridge we have is the LG 450L bottom mount refrigerator which uses 299kWh / year. As for other high energy consuming appliances, we do also have a microwave I forgot to menton which uses 1000kW - this is only used occasionally and like all our other appliances: If an appliance is not in use, they are switched off. No appliances are left on 'standby mode' (such as the t.v. - it is switched off at the wall).

I need to let you know the tone of some of the PowerCut episodes will be darker (albeit still Clean - with no explicit language used).
