A man, who has kept the law of God since his youth, wants to know what else he needs to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus shocked the man by telling him to sell all his possessions, give it to the poor and come and follow Him. The man left sad and not a follower of Christ. This narrative is intended to show us there is nothing we can do to inherit eternal life. Jesus’ own disciples were “exceedingly astonished” by Jesus’ declaration of the rich. That was the intent. They then asked the right question, “Then who can be saved?”
