As we finish out the season, I want to offer a few final thoughts about resilience. Today we’re going to be looking at the themes of resourcing and entering a new normal. As always, we’ll start our time together with a centering exercise and end with a benediction.

This is the last episode of the season, and the podcast will be taking a break. Every seven years in the Bible, God’s people would let their land rest, and I’m doing the same with this podcast. God willing, I will come back after the break renewed and with joy and creativity to share with you in future seasons.

Thank you so much for listening to this podcast. It’s an honor and joy to get to share with you.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

In today’s episode, you’re invited to meditate on an important prophetic passage, Isaiah 61, using a method called Lectio Divina, or “Divine Reading.” This method of engaging Scripture employs four movements: Reading, Reflecting, Responding, and Rest, and we will practice all of them together today.

If you’d like to read along with me today, I’ll be reading Isaiah 61:1-4, &10-11 out of the New American Standard Version. If you need longer to pray, meditate, respond, or journal in the midst of this episode, please feel free to stop and start the podcast as needed.

In today’s episode, I read from the book, Sacred Rhythms, by Ruth Haley Barton. If you’re interested in learning more about this practice or other spiritual disciplines, I highly recommend checking out this book for yourself.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

We haven’t talked a lot about addiction on the podcast, but I think it’s a topic that deserves some time and attention. So, I’m really thankful for today’s guest, Ericka Andersen, who shares about her journey from alcohol dependence to sobriety. Ericka just released her new book: Freely Sober: Rethinking Alcohol Through the Lens of Faith, and I loved getting to talk to her about it on the podcast.

In this episode, we talk about how alcohol affects and is marketed to women, specifically. We also talk about themes of addiction, self-medication, eating disorders, community, faith, and so much more.

I really appreciate that Ericka’s approach to sobriety is full of curiosity and compassion, not how-to’s and action steps. My hope is that today’s episode will help to spark your own curiosity about addiction and sobriety, and give you a new or more full perspective on the subject.

Today we’re talking about a topic that often goes under the radar or gets misunderstood: self-harm. I’m really grateful for this week’s guest, Brittany Tinsley, who shares some of her story and experience with self-injury. We talk about themes of faith, mental health and the church, ways this topic gets misrepresented, the change cycle, and elements of healing shame, gaining compassion, and receiving support. This conversation is handled with a lot of care, and whether or not you have personal experience with this topic, I think this episode will be helpful.

Brittany is an author and recently released a new book: Stories Our Scars Tell: Hope, Healing, and Honesty about the Wounds We Carry. If you enjoyed this episode and you’d like to know more of Brittany’s story, I hope you’ll go check it out!

If you were going to listen to just one episode about resilience this season, I would definitely recommend this one! Today, we’re reflecting on the reservoir that feeds our endurance, perseverance, and resilience.

In order to persist through difficulty, we must rally and borrow upon our reserves. Naturally, we have quite an amazing ability to survive and thrive, but supernaturally, we have access to an even greater Reserve.

I hope this episode is an encouragement to you and a reminder that you’re not alone.

In this 15 minute soul-care reflection episode, we’ll begin with a relaxing imaging exercise and then spend time talking about a phenomenon that happens when we hit our mental and emotional limit. When we feel overwhelmed, exhausted, grieved, or trapped, our brains access what I’m calling “the escape hatch.”

I share a few examples of how this phenomenon can show up, and how recognizing this pattern in ourselves is a helpful way to notice and pay attention to our emotions and needs.

One of my favorite passages in the New Testament is 2 Corinthians 4, so you can imagine my delight when I found out that today’s guest, Rev. April H. Cranford, recently led her church through a worship series about this passage. They called it the Treasured Clay Worship Series. She says,”throughout the series, we explored the divine power that resides within us as clay pots, each of us carrying the treasure of Christ.”

In this episode, April and I explore themes of disability, worship, advocacy, leadership, and soul-care. I’m really thankful for this conversation, and I hope you come away with a renewed gratitude for the body of Christ.

Ruptures can occur in all of our relationships, but have you ever considered that you can have ruptures within your relationship with yourself as well? If you enjoy this episode, and you’d like to hear more about the rupture and repair cycle, you can go back and listen to my previous episode on this topic: Rupture and Repair. Additionally, the Being Known Podcast has a whole series about Rupture and Repair in their Season 11.

Today, we’re continuing our theme of being a human in process, by considering normal human emotions and reactions that tend to come up as we are navigating life as a human on planet earth. Particularly, we’re looking at emotions and reactions related to the fight/flight response. In January we talked about anger, fear, and stress, and today we’re turning our attention to worry and anxiety.

In this episode, I’ll talk about how anxiety and fear are different, the importance of felt safety, how we can experience anxiety and worry differently depending on our background and personality, a little of what the Bible has to say on these topics, and a few ideas for how we can derail our brains from the cycle of rumination.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

Today we’re looking at the other half of the fight or flight response by considering fear and stress. What are they? What purpose do they serve? In what ways are they often misunderstood? We’ll talk about all of this and also look at some examples of where fear shows up in the Bible.

As always, we’ll begin by doing a slow down exercise and end with a benediction.

Next time, we’ll dig a little deeper by talking about anxiety and worry.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

Today we’re considering an often misunderstood but necessary emotion, anger. Being a human in process means that we will experience a variety of emotions, both comfortable and uncomfortable. Today, we conclude our series on the Psalms by examining Psalms of new orientation. We’ll be looking for signs of life, of rescue, of reversal of fortune, and of thanksgiving as we meditate upon Psalms 34 together.

What is clear in all of these Psalms of new orientation is that there is a celebration of the coming of God, who now establishes new rule. So this week, on the second week of Advent as we focus our attention on peace, we can remember that the Prince of Peace himself, came to be with us. He came to take his people from a place of distance and disorientation into a new orientation of rescue, redemption, and new life.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

We’re continuing our series on the Psalms and what they teach us about being a human in process. Today, we’re talking about psalms of disorientation. These are songs of darkness, of grief, of anger, of lament, and of complaint. These psalms answer the question of how we might worship and pray when our world is in disarray. Walter Brueggemann writes, “The use of these psalms of darkness may be judged by the world to be acts of unfaith and failure, but for the trusting community, their use is an act of bold faith, albeit a transformed faith.”

As we enter the first week of Advent, the candle signifies hope. We know that in Christ we don’t grieve as those who have no hope. In fact, my favorite quote about psalms of disorientation is, “Because this One has promised to be in the darkness with us, we find the darkness strangely transformed, not by the power of easy light, but by the power of relentless solidarity.”

In this episode, I referenced a previous podcast episode about Authenticity and Attachment. You can find that podcast episode here.

Information and quotes in this episode come from the book, Spirituality of the Psalms by Walter Brueggemann.

Today we continue our series on the Psalms and learning what they teach us about being a human in process. We’ll be meditating on a psalm of orientation today, Psalm 19. Psalms of orientation evoke gratitude for the blessings of creation and God’s good law. It just so happens that we’ll be reading this on the week of Thanksgiving, which is fitting!

If you missed last week’s episode, I hope you’ll go back and give it a listen as it gives a good overview of Walter Brueggemann’s ideas about Psalms of Orientation, Disorientation, and New Orientation.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

We might call this mini-series, “where faith meets mental health.” More specifically, we would call it, “where worship and prayer meet mental health.” For the next few weeks, we are going to be diving into the Psalms and examining them through Walter Brueggemann’s lens of orientation, disorientation, and new orientation. This framework beautifully encapsulates being a human in process, and what that can look like in different seasons of our faith.

In this episode, I’ll be giving an overview of orientation, disorientation, and new orientation. We’ll also talk about how this idea intersects with the gospel story. Then, over the next three episodes, we’ll be taking them one at a time and meditating on a Psalm from each of these categories.

Quotes from Walter Brueggemann in this podcast episode came from his book, Spirituality of the Psalms.

If you feel like you’re in survival mode and white knuckling your way through life, then this episode and this book are for you. It was a joy to have Sarah Pascual on the podcast today to talk with me about a book that we both recently read called, Try Softer, by Aundi Kolber, MA, LPC.

On a previous episode, Sarah and I discussed the book, Embracing Rhythms of Work and Rest, and we had so much fun, I invited her back to discuss another book. Sarah is in the process of becoming a spiritual director, and also works on staff at Resonate Church in Atlanta. Today, we’re continuing our series of being in process by exploring the five grief stages. Loss is a normal part of the human journey, and it’s helpful and empowering to understand the ways in which we may experience it. Although when we think about grief, often sadness is what comes to mind, there is actually so much more to the grief process.

I hope that as you listen, you’ll take time to reflect and notice when you’ve experienced each of the stages described. It may also help you better understand and have empathy for those in your life who are grieving.

We’ll start our episode with a grounding exercise and end with a benediction.

This week we’re talking about a subject that is an integral part of the human condition, grief. It’s a pretty important topic to start with, when it comes to being a human in process, because to be human, means to face loss: loss of dreams, expectations, people, and relationships.

Although this episode is definitely not exhaustive when it comes to tackling such a nuanced and complicated subject, I hope it does serve as a gentle starting place for us to begin noticing and attending to the places in our own lives that we need to lament.

It is no easy story, and to say the least, it has layers. Leah has experienced unexpected grief so many times, that she has felt as if she had a “target on her back.”

Whether or not you have experienced grief yourself, you will come away from this episode wiser. Leah shares the nitty gritty about making it through difficult circumstances, and wisdom about how to help others who are grieving.

In fact, Leah’s story could not adequately be captured in one episode, so her story will be continued next week as she shares about her parenting journey.

If this episode resonated with you, I’d love to hear about it. Comment below today’s show notes, or join the conversation on Facebook or Instagram.

Did you know that there is more than one kind of memory? In telling our stories, we are accessing both explicit and implicit memories to form a coherent narrative.

In this episode, we’ll begin with a calming exercise, then talk about the role of about explicit and implicit memory in our lives and in our stories. We’ll end with an exercise that can help to access and incorporate both kinds of memory. Make sure to have a paper and pencil nearby for this one!

In today’s episode, we’re continuing to ponder our own stories. Specifically, we’re examining how the lens of how suffering affects our stories. To do so, I’m using Walter Brueggemann’s framework for considering the Psalms in 3 parts: Orientation, Disorientation, and Reorientation. Regardless of which of these three frameworks you currently find yourself in, I hope that this episode will be thought-provoking and encouraging.

On this episode, Katie and I talk about the writing life, animals, Montana, what she’s reading these days, and how the theme of redemption shows up in her book. I really enjoyed talking with her, and I think you’re going to love this conversation too!

It was a joy to have Alicia Akins back on the podcast today to talk about her new book, The Gift of the Outsider: What Living in the Margins Teaches Us About Faith. This season we are talking about stories, and one story that needs to be told is that of the outsider. In this episode, Alicia defines what an outsider is, and we talk about the beauty of discovering the gifts that come to the body of Christ when we enter into relationship with those in the margins.

In this episode, Alicia tells her own story of often finding herself an outsider, and also shares perspective on some of the gifts that those in the margins can bring to the body of Christ. Alicia has traveled and lived in Asia, and she shares unique perspective on how she has seen the same dynamics in other cultures as well.

I found this conversation to be inspiring and challenging in the best of ways. May we have the courage to stand a little discomfort for the honoring of others in our midst, and may we have eyes to see and hearts open to learn and experience the fullness of the gifts Christ brings to His body, even the harder gifts like lament and suffering.

May you be encouraged on your journey with Jesus.

This season on the podcast we are immersing ourselves in stories: the stories of Scripture, the stories of guests, and learning from storytellers. However, there’s another story that deserves to be looked at this season, and that’s your story.

In today’s episode, we’re beginning to examine and engage our own stories. We’ll begin with a grounding exercise, then begin to dissect elements of a story and how those elements show up in your narrative. Then, we’ll end by considering a few ways that you can begin piecing together your own story.

Story work is sacred work.

Today, we begin season 6 of the podcast! This season our theme is, Tell Your Story, and what better way to begin, than to talk to a storyteller. Our podcast guest today is, T.I. Lowe, storyteller and author.

Personally, I’m a fan of her books, so it was a joy to get to sit down and talk to her about writing, life, motherhood, and faith. Although her pen name is T.I. Lowe, to her friends, her name is Tonya. She has written over twenty novels, but her latest are Under the Magnolias and Indigo Isle.

In this episode, Tonya and I talk about her writing journey, how curiosity inspires her stories, how faith is a part of her life and writing, and how living in the South is a huge part of her storytelling. We also talk about elements of mental health that show up in her books, as well as random horticulture facts. (I can’t help it. I love plants!)

Today, we’re finishing our attachment series, by talking about moving from insecurity in our relationship with God to a place of security. Remember all of the insecure attachment styles? We’re going back over them today, but differently! Instead of relating them to our earthly relationships, we’re exploring how they present themselves in our relationship with God.

Just as always, I want you to know that there is so much hope for healing in this area. God made us for connection – with others and with Himself!

Before we close our attachment series, I wanted to spend some time talking about what attachment looks like in our relationship with the Lord. Of course, that begs the question: How can we be attached to someone who is invisible?

In order to do that, we’re diving into Scripture to find examples of secure attachment. We’re spending time with the Trinity, but also with David, because through the Psalms we get a glimpse of the security he felt in his relationship with the Lord. We’re also talking about the face of God, and how His affect towards us changes the way we experience Him.

In this episode, I reference my conversation with Ed Khouri from Season 4 about grace. If you’d like to go back and listen to that episode, you can find it here: Episode 97.

I hope you’ll join me next week as we talk about insecurity and healing in our relationship with the Lord.

As a part of our attachment series, I am so pleased to share this conversation with you. This episode takes all of the attachment information we’ve talked about thus far and makes it applicable and relevant to our everyday lives as parents.

It was such a joy to talk with Jeffrey and Amy Olrick about their book, The 6 Needs of Every Child: Empowering Parents and Kids Through the Science of Connection. Jeffrey has a background in attachment research, and he talks about that on today’s episode. He and his wife Amy also have the privilege of raising three boys, and in their book they eloquently pair real life parenting examples with the research of attachment. We’ve made it through all four of the attachment styles, but wait! There’s a fifth style, and this one is the most hopeful of all. It’s called earned secure attachment.

Thankfully, God has designed our brains to be able to learn secure attachment patterns, even in adulthood. In today’s episode we’ll talk about ways in which one can move from insecure attachment to earned secure.

Although the content in today’s episode is deep and somewhat heavy at times, it also may be very enlightening to help you understand some relationship dynamics or tendencies in your own life, or in someone you love. We’ll be ending the podcast with an excerpt from John 17, looking for themes of secure attachment in God’s Word.
