In today's episode of The Better Self Show I bring you a bit of a philosophical topic, the state of nature, that I think it is very interesting to know about and to consider when thinking about life topics whichever they may be.
The first thing of course is to give some context and definition of the state of nature.
So for this natural state you can think about the human beings in prehistorical times. When we used to be very close to nature many thousands of years ago. Sleeping in caves, moving around from one place to another in search for food, water and shelter.
In that state we were very different from now and we have evolved, but not as much as one may think from a biological perspective. Especially when taking into account the rate at which technology has evolved en the last few hundred years and how biology and genes take a longer time.
Think about the importance of doing exercise in our lives. There is a lot of scientific evidence of the benefits of doing some form of exercise, and I'm going to assume that you know about it. The point here is that in the state of nature, or when societies were not so evolved, we needed to do a lot more exercise on a daily basis to move around, get food, water, shelter and all that since car, planes and so on did not exist.
So this is just an example of how we can understand some of our needs from the state of nature's perspective that could also be applied to any other areas in life.
Another clear one is food. There is a lot of 'shitty' food in the supermarkets, with chemicals and all that. (I also eat some bad stuff from time to time, less now, but I do. Not perfect, you know!)
And then there are organic foods free from chemicals and pesticides etc... Now think about how "good food" for us is almost the same food that our ancestors used to it, closer to the state of nature. You get the point.
When talking about the state of nature, I MUST (morally and ethically) bring one of my favorites, Jean Jack Rousseau, the french philosopher. His book, Discourse on the Origin of Inequality is one of the sources where I learned the most about this topic. If you want, or maybe if I get inspired, I may record one episode about the book.
Anyways, I hope that you learned a new cool topic from this episode that you can apply to your life. And maybe you can even think about what is the state of nature for you and how it affects you? Tell me in a comment if you wish to share.
Thank you so much for listening to the episode and remember that you can support the podcast to help me keep going with it :)
