This is day 108 of our journey.
After Solomon's death, his son Rehoboam became king. Rehoboam was prideful and foolishly failed to listen to the requests of his people. As a result, the kingdom was split in two, with an Ephraimite named Jeroboam taking ten tribes to become the newly organized nation of Israel while the tribes of Judah and Benjamin maintained a separated kingdom that remained loyal to the Davidic line. In Israel, Jeroboam feared that worshiping in Jerusalem would cause people to return to Rehoboam, so he erected two golden calves for the people to worship. As a result of this idolatry, Jeroboam was told that his kingdom would be torn away from his family, and that eventually, Israel's sin would cause the whole nation to be taken into exile. Jeroboam was in constant war with the house of Judah. While the southern kingdom made no serious effort militarily to regain power over the north, there was a long-lasting boundary dispute which lasted during the reigns of several kings.
Join me in 1 Kings 12-14 to hear about the dividing of the nation of Israel.
Key verses:
1 Kings 12:15
The king refused to listen to the people, because the Lord was instigating this turn of events so that he might bring to pass the prophetic announcement he had made through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
1 Kings 13:2
He cried out against the altar with the Lord’s message, “O altar, altar! This is what the Lord has said, ‘Look, a son named Josiah will be born to the Davidic dynasty. He will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who offer sacrifices on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’”
1 Kings 14:16
He will hand Israel over to their enemies because of the sins which Jeroboam committed and which he made Israel commit.”
