This week, we are introduced to another of Jesus’ disciples: Levi (better known to us as Matthew). If the first four disciples of Jesus represent the common man of Israel, Levi would appear at the opposite end of the spectrum. He is one of the hated tax collectors. Can God’s grace really extend even to Levi? As we consider the expanse of God’s mercy in Mark 2, we’re also brought face to face with our own continuing need of God’s saving work in Jesus Christ. The danger for many Christians is that we become less like Levi and his fellow “sinners” and more like the self-righteous Pharisees, whom Jesus condemns.
