When the words "UV light meter" or "photometer" are used instead of radiometer or optometer, it is often assumed that the system is configured to see only visible light. The contents of the device are generally the same as those of a light meter or photometer with a small bandpass UV filter, but it costs several hundred dollars to use a smaller bandpass UV filter to get better readability at a certain UVB wavelength. Compared to the cost and complexity of an ordinary light meter or optical optometer, these instruments are powerful tools that easily sell for five times as much. If the meter is really a UV meter calibrated to 365 nm and clearly in the UVB range, then the name "meter" is a bit wrong.

Calibration options include scan calibration, current emitting sensor calibration (COS) and high performance calibration. A new range of advanced calibration tools for UV exposure measurement systems is under development.
