Cabin Devos: Recent Episodes

David Tubirye

A live show where David Tubirye invites and interviews this world‘s best speakers on topics you may hear about on the pulpit. One anonymous Reviewer said, ”I think the content is great. It is well thought through and thoroughly prepared. Honestly, I‘ve not seen a consistent Ugandan Christian podcast like Cabin devos. The first time I listened in I knew by the end of the podcast that this was the right place to be. But most importantly, it is the sound gospel/doctrine that is being preached.”

Judas walked away—just days before the greatest victory in history was revealed.

That contrast raises a question many of us wrestle with:

How do we know when to keep going… and when to let go?

In Philippians 3, Paul gives us a powerful picture of what it means to press on—to know Christ deeply, to experience His power, and to refuse to be held back by the past. And when we look at Luke 24, we see something equally striking: some stayed. They waited. They endured. And they witnessed the resurrection.

But not everyone did.

Sometimes life feels like a waiting room, quiet, uncertain, and full of questions. In this episode of Cabin Devos, we explore what it means to wait on God with patience, hope, and faith. Using Genesis, we unpack how God’s timing is perfect even when nothing around us seems to be moving.

You’ll be guided through three reflective questions designed to help you:

  1. Examine your own seasons of waiting
  2. See how God is at work even in silence
  3. Respond with faith, not frustration

This episode was born out of exhaustion.

Not the kind you fix with rest, but the kind that settles quietly into your spirit and makes you wonder if you’re carrying life alone. In that tired place, a sarcastic comment on Facebook lingered longer than it should have: “Focus on yourself, don’t mind the relatives—they only come together to help with burial preparations.” It was meant to be funny, but when you’re already worn down, jokes like that confirm a deeper fear—that when it really matters, no one shows up.

The story takes us to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus asked His closest friends to stay awake and pray with Him, just a little longer. They loved Him. They meant well. But they fell asleep. And Jesus named a truth we still live with today: “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

This episode sits in that tension—between willingness and weakness, faith and fatigue, loneliness and endurance. Through honest reflections from different voices, we explore what it feels like to stay awake when others are worn out, to hope when support feels thin, and to remember that even when everyone else sleeps, God does not.

If you’ve been tired, disappointed, or quietly holding on, this conversation is for you.

Come sit with us in the garden—and learn what it means to stay awake a little longer.

Prayer isn’t always easy. In this conversation, David, Grace, and Pastor Frankie wrestle with two big questions: “I struggle with prayer—true or false?” and “If God answered all my prayers, would my life be better?”

Together they explore what it means to pray without ceasing, how communal prayer shapes us, and why God’s wisdom often protects us from our own requests. Rooted in Philippians 4 and the Lord’s Prayer, this episode invites you to yield after “amen,” find peace in God’s timing, and walk with Him in the everyday.

we wrestle with the gray areas of honesty. Is it ever okay to withhold part of the truth if our motives seem pure? Does God judge us by the intentions of our heart, or by the words we actually speak? Together, we’ll dig into what Scripture says about integrity, deception, and the fine line between silence and falsehood.

Get ready for a conversation that challenges us to think deeper: Is leaving out details an act of wisdom—or a subtle form of dishonesty?

Loving people who are hard to love is never simple. Should love mean staying silent to protect relationships, or does real love speak hard truths? And does accepting someone mean overlooking wrong patterns—or calling them higher? In this episode, we explore one of the hardest yet most transformative aspects of faith—surrender. Inspired by Mark 14:32-36 and Flavia Olwol’s powerful commentary, we dive into Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, where He faced overwhelming sorrow but still declared, “Not my will, but Yours.”

Why is surrender so difficult? How do we trust God when His plans don’t look like what we expected? Through insightful reflections from Flavia, real-life stories from our community, and practical steps for walking in surrender, this episode will challenge and encourage you to trust God in your own “Gethsemane” moments.

In this episode, we explore a powerful commentary by Flavia Olwol, reflecting on how life’s interruptions—like her cancer diagnosis—can become divine invitations to draw closer to God. Using the story of Jesus’ transfiguration in Mark 9, we uncover lessons about the importance of solitude, listening to God’s voice, and trusting His plans, even when they differ from our own.

Join me as we reflect on what it means to climb your own “high mountain” of solitude, embrace God’s presence, and gain clarity in your walk with Him. This episode will inspire you to step away from distractions and hear His voice more clearly in your daily life.

In this episode, we explore the life-giving rest that Jesus offers in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” We unpack what it means to experience rest as a gift rather than another task on your to-do list.

Discover how rest restores not just your body but your mind and spirit, why it’s essential even in the busiest seasons, and how Jesus modeled it for us. With practical tips, fresh insights, and heartfelt reflections, we invite you to step into God’s invitation for renewal, refreshment, and connection.

Jesus prioritized solitude with the Father, even after exhausting days of ministry—showing us the importance of intentional time with God.

This week everyday on Cabin Devos we are publishing an Episode at 9:00 pm.

These are interviews and conversations I have had with friends on our live shows that  I believe will bless you.

This coming sunday on the 20th of November we are having eleanor + all her singles friends coming to explain to us why they fear to commit.

We shall discuss fears singles have concerning marriage. Some are legit fears, they are problems that married people now can not escape ...while others are baseless fears.

Question for you: “Is hell for rich people?” After all, it is harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Sounds like a Sunday school question and some have urged that it the love of money that is the problem and not money in it’s self. But this verse does not say that it’s harder for the rich man that loves his money. It’s simply the rich money. I’m yet to find to rich men that don’t love their money. As we navigate this tough economy we need to learn where the traps are and avoid them.

Welcome to this episode that ask the question, “Is hell for rich people?”

  1. Diversity is a reality of life and therefore a reality of any society or team. Examples in everyday life:
  2. The human body (legs, heart, eyes, head, hands etc.)
  3. A soccer team (strikers, defenders, coach, doctors etc.)
  4. A nation has different tribes and even within tribes there is clans.
  5. Government (president, judiciary, cabinet, security forces etc.)

  6. Its possible for diversity to be used for unity as opposed as a basis for division. The Bible is full of pictures of diversity that work in unity (Teamwork)

    1. The Trinity (God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
    2. 12 Tribes of Israel conquering the Promised Land.
    3. The Church composed of Jews and Gentiles called to be one (Galatians 3:28)

One verse I can not get out of my mind is “…upon this rock  I will build my church.” Matthew 16:18

What does that mean? You can urge about who or what the rock is one thing you can’t urge about is;

Christ is the builder and if we are going to find any problems tonight … we shall find that we as humans are the ones drifting. May be we have redefined church…? I don’t know… But one thing I know is that we have some very well studied guests. They have wrestled with these things the same way we have (in our doubt)

There is going to be an imaginary line in todays discussion.  We are not discussing online Vs. Physical church although you will hear the limitations of online church sticking out like a soar thumb.

The argument tonight is why we should all belong to a church. A body of believers.

It seems like life is a sum of pain and painkillers. Constantly seeking for something to take away the pain. We say, “I will be fine as long as I have this in place.” The things we can’t get, we place them before God in prayer and hope that He answers, the sooner - the better. This feeling of suffering when we have done nothing wrong is real and can be confusing.

But Osward Chambers says, “The purpose of prayer is that we get ahold of God, not of the answer. It is impossible to be well physically and to be dejected, because dejection is a sign of sickness.”

We hope you are blessed by the episode

Have you ever felt you are not cut out for ministry? That it is meant for some one else? Oh that it is too difficult. You hear of missionaries that die broke. Missionaries that have no real friends or never get to enjoy life. When you think of ministry you think of church politics, you think of going to another country or belonging to a missions organisation and you are forever stuck in a world of the unknown. Where every meal is a prayer request.

Oh When you think of ministry, do you think of meeting the needs of others like the orphans or street kids and the vulnerable. Do you ever stop to wonder if we could (even) ever come to end of all this struggle. Do you you ever feel like all this is impossible and useless to try.

See, the issue is we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God

So, where does one get the audacity from to tell me about the sin I have committed as if they are without sin?

Prophet Nathan rebuked David. In the end we are glad that God sent a Nathan.

Question: Who is your Nathan? Who is your David?

There is a major debate of whether or not success is luck.

Being ranked 11th unluckiest man means alot of bad stuff has happened.

But Erik, "all things work out together for the good" is real and it is real for us too.

May be we just do not see it.

We have for the last 2 episodes been talking about relationships and of course the area of purity has to come up. It is such a hot topic that we are doing 2 parts for it. And today is going to be a special focus on this young man devoid of understanding. (“devoid of understanding” is a very polite way of saying, “you are Dense! My friend!” )

But today is not about insulting people but I believe the Bible uses such phrases to emphasise a major point. Where there is wisdom, there is also “un-wiseness” and this is one of those cases.

The passage says in verse 22 “All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver,

like a bird darting into a snare,

little knowing it will cost him his life.” - Proverbs 7: 22

I’m not the main speaker today but I would like to make a point for anyone hear that thinks “that can never be me” - You are “little knowing.”

Some one may ask, “At what point did this young man turn foolish? What was his first mistake? At what point should he have turned around”

First, his first mistake we don’t know, was he always foolish? Possible but still not sure. I don’t want to believe that tis was his first compromise. This was the compromise that finally cost him his life

Secondly, At what point should he have turned around? I also want to believe that for a breath he took, right there with him was an opportunity to turn around.

In this episode we are once again joined by Pr. Sam Ithiga as we try to return to the true meaning of purity.

He also answers a question asked by an imaginary young man that thought sexual struggles would stop once he is married. To the one that has "blown it" this episode delivers hope from the assurances we have in God's word.

Enjoy!

We naturally feel that if we think something, it must be true because it comes from within us. But just because you think something does not make it true. As I said above, I have seen the face of mental illness. So many different suggestions can come into the mind. The world puts suggestions in our minds that are false, and we are bombarded with those false ideas all the time. And, of course, Satan makes suggestions all the time. But your problem is much deeper than Satan. Everybody has a mental illness. We are all mentally ill. The mental illness is called sin. And the Bible uses at least a dozen different phrases for the condition of our minds under sin. Our minds are:

confused (Deuteronomy 28:20)

anxious, closed (Job 17:3–4)

evil, restless (Ecclesiastes 2:21–23)

rash, deluded (Leviticus 5:4; Isaiah 32:4 NIV)

The Bible talks about:

a troubled mind (2 Kings 6:11)

a depraved mind (1 Timothy 6:5)

a sinful mind (Romans 8:7 NIV)

a dull mind (2 Corinthians 3:14 NIV)

a blinded mind (2 Corinthians 4:4)

a corrupt mind (2 Timothy 3:8)

Our Broken Minds

Link

Our minds are broken by sin. Which means we cannot trust even what we think, ourselves. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” We have an amazing ability to lie to ourselves. You do it all the time.

It is unrelenting, and it is unfair because Satan never plays fair. And the reason why it is so intense is that your greatest asset is your mind.

When Paul said, ""For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing." alot is revealed.

One of the revelations in those verses is the concept of failure. Our minds sometimes just can not handle failure.

Both to the Spiritual heart and the physical organ as we know it. Today’s poster has and Rubik’s cube! That thing is complex. I actually bought one but have since failed to solve it. I have pulled it out and placed it on my desk several times. I have taken breaks from work to try and solve it but… not yet. - Some day! The mind is more complex than that… imagine a Rubik’s cube whose colours are constantly changing for every move that you make. And then in the year 2020 as you are about to figure out the order of those changing colors a virus comes and introduces a whole new set of colours and in the process locks some of the moves you would have taken to solve the puzzle. On top of that, you are told …”You can only solve this cube with one hand.” Now, that is not just complex, it’s insane.

Thank you so much for listening to Cabin Devos.

See, when we talk about grief, one of the first verses that may come to mind is 1 Thess 4:13, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.”

Many commentators have pointed out that this verse does not prohibit us from grieving but to grief but like those with hope. And that is true, but how?

How in times where we can not be friends to grieve with?

This time We are also talking about a teacher that has to comfort a student that has lost a parent. A doctor that has lost a patient. A boss losing a coworker.  These third parties suffer with grief too. They are supposed to help but are in equal pain.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says…

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not learn on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. May we remember this truth in moments when we do not know that to do.

What you are about to listen to are thoughts that were recorded in the month of June 2021.

The general setting:

Uganda just like several other countries is under strict regulation to help curb the rapid spread of the Covid-19 Virus that can made many extremely sick and several friends have lost their loved ones.

And now here begins my journal when I found out that my 79 year old mom had tested positive. The level of difficulty every one has had to go through varies per individual. But I believe God is able to carry each one of us through life’s difficult moments. This is only but a personal testimony. I hope you will be encouraged.

Mediocre Devotion is no devotion at all. We tend to cruise through our walk with the Lord. Do what’s expected and a standard lower. Show up to church but show up late, talk about sharing the gospel but never actually do, ...give excuses for our under “performance” in the things of God. Other things take justified priority. Soon, it does not matter any more. “We are out “

[ THIS IS PART 2 OF A 3-PART SERIES ]On Wednesday, May 5, we discussed how the heart is developed, both physically and spiritually, and how both care of the body (the temple of the Holy Spirit) and the mind relate to the heart. [ THIS IS PART 1 OF A 3-PART SERIES ]

Dr. John Norris has been a cardiologist (heart doctor) for more than 25 years and a Christian for almost 50 years. During that time “Dr. John” has extensively studied the physical (natural) and spiritual (supernatural) aspects of the heart. The Bible has more than 1,000 references to the heart, and according to Scripture, the heart is the most important part of every human being.

On Monday, May 3, we defined the heart and tried to understand how the physical and spiritual aspects of the heart relate. The human heart was reviewed and defined as the “organ which allows a man to see God.” God’s view of the human heart was reviewed from the Scriptures, and the importance of using the heart to love was the focus.

Now, one could really struggle to try and pick the meaning of the words "Crucified in the flesh" from the book of Galatians.

But, it's interesting that when you go to Romans 6:6, It makes everything very very clear... it seems to be a commentary to what all this means.

hypocrite ultimately came into English from the Greek word hypokrites, which means “an actor” or “a stage player.” The Greek word itself is a compound noun: it’s made up of two Greek words that literally translate as “an interpreter from underneath.” That bizarre compound makes more sense when you know that the actors in ancient Greek theater wore large masks to mark which character they were playing, and so they interpreted the story from underneath their masks. - https://www.merriam-webster.com
