Episode: S1 E1 - Sally, Sign Language Interpreter
Pub date: 2020-01-05

Notes from The Listener:

Interview with a sign language interpreter about her job and why she wanted to follow this career. She had a passion for languages as a teenager but struggled with learning the ones available to her at school, before she signed up for a British Sign Language course on a whim and discovered an aptitude for it. As well as explaining the practicalities of her interpretation work, she talks about the still-uncertain legal status of sign languages, and why legislation to protect them matters to everything from access to healthcare to ensuring people can get work

Hello friends! Welcome to the first episode of Know You Better where I interview an interesting person and dive deep into what they do.

This episode I'm talking to my friend Sally, who works as a sign language interpreter. I ask her how she first was drawn to the profession, get into exactly what the term sign language encompasses, and learn a few things myself along the way.
