Podcast: 30 Animals That Made Us Smarter (LS 59 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)
Episode: Peacock and computer screen
Pub date: 2019-09-30
Notes from The Listener:
What can a peacock’s tail teach us about making better screens? Quite a bit, it seems. This BBC World Service series profiles a different animal in each of its 30 episodes with reference to what its biology can do to improve human technology. The colour-changing abilities of peacock feathers could help us make displays that require far less energy. I would also recommend the episodes about mussels, which can improve both foetal surgery and plywood, apparently. Also, host Patrick Aryee has a lovely smooth voice that rivals David Attenborough’s dulcet tones, in my opinion
Unlocking the secrets of the dazzling colours in the tail of the peacock. It is designed to attract females but has caught the eye of scientists, as they mimic it to develop high-resolution reflective colour-screen displays. With Patrick Aryee.
