PETER KIRN fuels his love of techno and dancefloors with a deep background in experimental music and machines. He's released his own music on Detroit Underground, Snork Enterprises, Instruments of Discipline, and his imprint Establishment, as well as engaging collaborations from architecture and spatial sound to modern dance. As an organizer of open collaborative performance labs, he's worked with CTM, MUTEK.mx, STUK, and Nusasonic/WSK festivals. He writes and speaks about music making and creative technologies, including running the daily site CDM (cdm.link) and co-producing the MeeBlip synthesizer hardware line.

Playing around improvising with Arturia V Collection while doing a review - Piano V3 with its new engine, plus effects.
A live jam made with the MOD Devices Dwarf effects hardware - using only a single custom patch on the Arturia MicroBrute as an input, and heavy use of Shiro and other effects. A little sonic reverie while I'm working on a review of the brilliant Dwarf for CDM:

Mixed live, as always.
I was feeling an itch for frenetic dystopian futurism. I also think about some of the energy in the last longer-distance trips and missing artist friends from those journeys, so to find this combination, I mix from Japan to the Philippines to Indonesia, Taipei to LA to yes, Bangkok and Berlin. Those experimental artists compose those fragmentary narratives, with voices real, transformed, and synthetic. I hope that as electronic music evolves, we don't only listen to musical centers, but to the deeper connections we feel between one another. That includes the recent decentralized remix project from Senyawa; my contribution on L_KW is here. All this music is on Bandcamp for the digging and buying.

I got to mess about with Roland's new TR-8S drum machine, playing along with Roland's Nick de Friez in Berlin and ... then this happened.
What's fun: chaining. Trigger outs. New effects. Rhythmic variations. So yeah, if you thought you'd just be plodding along with some 808 and 909 sounds in an endless dry 16-step loop... no.

Inspired in part by an acephalgic migraine I experienced recently / scintillating scotoma (an optical distortion in perception which - in this case happily was not followed by the headache)

PETER KIRN - BELLONA USA LP Coming Fall 2017 from Establishment
Enter Bellona - a musical world Inspired by the science fiction novel Dhalgren, set in a mentally unstable vision of post-apocalyptic America ruled by disorientation and disarray. This is techno driving futurism into a realm of forgotten names and fragmentary narratives, wandering astronauts, optic chains. It’s a celebratory dance atop a USA in which broadcast media has broken down, amidst a landscape of entangled multi-way love affairs and gangs of wandering lost figures.
For this circular ruin, as William Gibson called it, Bellona the LP offers cyclic dance riddles - hallucinations, loops, and echoes, steady straight four-on-the-floor kicks holding a groove as textures slip into quicksand. Threads of synth lines drift in and out against multistable polyrhythms, without a sense of beginning or end - a hedonistic celebration of Dhalgren's own circular plotlines. Tricks of perception in rhythm and timbre and pitch twist songs into Escher-like confusion. This is life on the American frontier, post disassociation.

It also includes some electro-magnetic radiation, converted to audible sound.
In addition, I've included sounds of the popping of nitrogen valves from the Materials & Electrical Components Laboratory, involved in a materials test.
The microphones used for this recording are specially made by Slovakia's Jonáš Gruska (LOM Label). Audible spectrum recordings are made with Uši; EMF recordings with Elektrosluch.

Playing with Urs Heckmann's Protoverb... here, the beginnings of some ambient composition, applying custom reverbs (all in this free plug-in) to leaf blower recordings.

Live solo piano in a living room in Riga, recorded from the audience. At Kaņepes Kultūras centrs, Rīga - the wind you hear toward the end is the open windows as we let in some cool air on this rainy August night.

A series of live jams with the new littleBits Synth Kit, a simple modular system made in collaboration with KORG using magnets to connect modules.
All recorded live with only light edits and no post-processing, directly into an iPad via Sonoma WireWorks' (very nice-sounding) GuitarJack and Sonoma StudioTrack.
In Etudes 1-3, you'll hear some variations on a two-oscillator synth with (MS-20) filter, envelope, and delay. (Etude #3 makes use of the noise source for modulation.)
Etude 4 is an example of a frequency modulation setup.
Etude 5 uses the random oscillator for percussion.
These use the step sequencer, occasionally triggered from the keyboard.

P. Kirn's live AV project Aeolian Map combines piano recordings by the composer with self-built software in Processing and Pure Data for live performance and visualization. Music for Dance P. KIRN
MUSIC FOR DANCE is a compilation of music I produced for choreographers, 2002-2011. I've recomposed these materials into a continuous musical soundscape. It's a new narrative that's independent of the original works, but inspired by the connection to these collaborators.
I realize looking back at this work that it represents a chapter in my life, living in Manhattan and working in computer sounds in live, improvisatory contexts, challenged and transformed by the experience of space and time found in the modern dance scene there. Now, looking back on those nine years in New York City takes on a special meaning.
I want in particular to recognize the long-term collaborative relationships I had with two choreographers and fellow Sarah Lawrence College alumni, Kathy Westwater and Christopher Williams. The sound materials here come largely from work for Kathy Westwater, especially her Dark Matter series, along with works completed with Christopher Williams, Elise Knudson, and Pauliina Ailennoinen. The sounds are synthesized or heavily digitally processed, with only momentary incursions of sampled and found sound, including a brief interludes of my own vocals and processed flute/vocal sounds recorded with the talented Margaret Lancaster.
Venues included Dance Theater Workshop, 92nd Street Y, Boston Cyberarts Festival, Joyce SoHo, and others. Thanks to John Yannelli, Sarah Rudner, Dan Hurlin, and Emily Devine of the Sarah Lawrence Dance program.
