So during lockdown I worked with a lifelong friend, a musician Tom Southerton who’s now based in Japan, to develop a podcast. I wanted to turn the tables and get me to talk a little bit more in depth about the importance of the broadcast network of connections.
It was great to talk with a few consultants from the Hawk network throughout the series and discover what their projects were like. As this is the broadcast network series I also liked getting guests from more obscure or leftfield areas too.

More from host Ben:
I have been working at the 'hard end' of broadcast independently for many years, if there's a major transformation or project needing a specialist - this is where I shine. A big fan of cloud, DevOps and agile methods - I like having enough technical grounding and balance it with communicating with people - of all levels.
It all started working in production and editing videos on a laptop to now helping deliver huge complex broadcast projects where I can turn up and not be phased by any of it - let me work with the team and get on with delivering it without supervision. You will see from my track record all of this and when you meet me I like to build up trust and demonstrate this by attention to detail, honesty and big picture mentality.
In my spare time I love culture, like to travel and explore where I can improve my photography hobby - also like to get involved in charity fundraising. If you want to reach out feel free to send me a connection here and we can talk.
Specialities - project management, business analyst, media solutions engineering, workflow specialist, technical consultant, agile, facilitation, training
Me and Angus go way back and was one of my first senior managers I sort of got on with really, he has time for anyone and thought he would be a great guest. His expansion of Hawk has been incredible especially over the last year and fascinating to find out what’s behind it all.
It was great to find out that Angus has also spent some of his career in satellite, radio and the European space agency - giving weight to finding your ideal role!

I founded The Hawk Media Partnership to meet the needs of broadcast and media companies looking for a one stop shop in technical consultancy.
Broadcast & media is undergoing extraordinary change. Conventional linear TV is giving way to radical new models of media delivery. New players like Netflix, Amazon and Apple are pumping millions into production and rights acquisition. DAZN is on the warpath. Will BBC Match of the Day, which began in 1964, still have an audience in 2024?
These monumental changes, coupled with intense competition for eyeballs, mean that broadcasters and their suppliers need to be able to deliver media to consumers better than ever before - faultlessly, seamlessly and efficiently.
Through a mutual friend and someone I’d done a show with previously it was a recommendation - Amber was keen to do a show and I had a slot left.

More on our panel guests:
Paul Markham:
I've done software, hardware, infrastructure, networks, web, cloud, security, audio, video and broadcast technologies. I've managed teams, recruited teams, performance managed and handled redundancies. I took the ITIL foundation exam and got only one answer wrong. I've worked on business cases, led workshops, solved awkward problems and generally tried to bridge the gaps between technology, business and people to get to the real initiatives that can make things better.
Tony Dotchin:
Prince 2 and Agile qualified Project Manager with a proven track record of delivering complex and diverse projects.
Experienced in design and delivery of contribution events using technical and operational knowledge to create robust and innovative delivery mechanisms and operational solutions for sports broadcasting. Extensive experience on DTT and DTH platforms. Former REME avionics technician.
Jonathan Marshall
Whether in his earlier role in BBC R&D or latterly in commercial innovation, Jonathan has played a key role in the invention and dissemination of many of the interactive technologies we now take for granted - Red button TV, hybrid TV (internet + broadcast) and integration of programming with Social networks and online trends. To do so has required a leading level of creative and truly multidisciplinary understanding and vision, working with other visionaries, writers, programme makers, technologists and broadcasters. The result of his work has been to significantly extend the reach and possibility of the creative industries in both broadcast and online environments.
Phil Hodgetts:
I partner with broadcasters and telecommunications companies across Europe to scale their flexible workforce in-line with delivery needs. My role is to work closely with various client stakeholders to scope requirements of unique and complex technology programmes, understand what skills are required and deliver those skills from Caspian One's Partnered Network of Associates.
I’d met Jeremy working on related projects in the industry, it was only after he became one of the network of Hawk consultants that I really understood what makes him tick. It was interesting to hear from someone who’s been around the block and likes the smaller broadcasters and companies now.
Who knew that Jeremy was once a TV presenter, he comes from the creative and post-production side of broadcast and now finds himself deep in the technology now.

With more than 25 years’ experience in broadcast television operations and programme-making, I offer unique leadership for hard-working teams, provide structure to complicated activities and solve knotty problems in pressured and dynamic environments to deliver efficiencies and clever solutions.
A hybrid background leading operational and technical teams for large and small businesses in the television industry together with experience writing, directing and editing programmes for ITV and BBC helps me bridge gaps of understanding between creative and operational parts of businesses.
Having put out another guest slot post wondering who may respond I was interested in Priyanka’s response as she is in social media software. My take on it was is it part of broadcast media and how it has evolved with the younger generations.

More from guests Shannon & Priyanka:
Our founders Shannon Almeida and Priyanka Vazirani reimagined the news after they personally witnessed the jarring implications of biased news while working on a social campaign for their first startup. Now, they are taking on the media industry as a whole by solving its three main challenges - reader's declining attention span, information overload, and most importantly, media bias - in an easy, approachable manner.
I’ve known Kim for many years and always been a friendly outgoing type in the industry so I directly messaged her and invited her on the show. Glad she was able to impart some of her insights into acquiring skills in the industry and what it’s like to move on.
Kim explains her early days and the fact that commercials were mastered on tape and couriered around to the broadcast facilities. Also little known fact is her candle making side hobby!

I must have known Debbie for over 20 years since our call centre job at Uni and she was doing music production and initially wanted to go in that direction. I always bump into her at trade shows and always got time for each other - so when I was looking for final guests I decided to ask her.
Was great figuring out what went on since Uni as she left in the audio direction and only just figured out how she then took the broadcast route but via the audio route in. The talk is a good eye opener into starting in a place, company or role that is far removed from what you do today.

It was through our mutual network of consultants at Hawk that I met Kevin, I wasn’t sure what his specialist expertise was - until he offered to do a guest slot. It was great as I’d never been in the commercial part of broadcast so I learnt a thing or 2 from him.
The insight Kevin gives to brinkmanship, where deals go to the wire and where both sides know they need to make a deal - it was fascinating. He also offered alternate podcasts from anything from sailing to pottery I think!

I’d heard of the RISE network through acquaintances in the industry, I was looking for new guests and registered on a podcast guest website and saw Tanya’s profile. By chance I’d asked about being a guest and then connected the dots and worked out she is a board member of RISE - so very happy to have her on the show.
It’s often a subject not talked about so often in broadcast media about emotions and glad we talked about support and diversity too. One standout moment was that Tanya is the same ‘ENFJ-A’ personality type as I am - great minds alike!

Me and Paul had been to the same cloud meetups and trade shows realising we both worked in broadcast it then turned out we worked on the same projects for different companies. When I advertised for series 2 guests Paul replied and wanted to talk about one of my favourite subjects - cloud, and was happy to give him a slot!
I knew Paul could talk the socks off me in terms of tech, what I managed to question him on was strategy, people and service processes that all wrap around the actual architectures. Was great to find out how involved he was in delivering the Olympics in the technology sphere he’s in.

I met Hannah through the Hawk Media Partnership, always beat me at the quiz we do together! Over the months I understood what Hannah was about and her passion for post-production engineering stood out - so was a great candidate for a podcast!
As a consummate professional and with everyone home working and home schooling in some cases it was great that Hannah made the time and managed a busy home life to talk about being on top of the engineering discipline with broadcast.

It was a friend of a friend who suggested the connection, I reached out to my academic circles but instead of getting the lecturer I was introduced to Julian who was a media trainer and series producer - perfect fit! What's great about the episode is Julian's producing experience (and great stories to go with it) but most of all his passion for getting newcomers onto the TV ladder and like me paying it forwards.

Some more info on our guest Georgina:
A highly experienced, multi-skilled floor manager with 11 years freelancing in the television broadcast industry. With a strong background in performing arts, communicating clearly and effectively and providing a professional but personable welcome to guests onto set, customer facing roles are no problem. Well developed knowledge of technical equipment in broadcast studios, as well as balancing time management and team work to ensure a smooth output.
Jim was one of the first responders to my podcast guest request, I was interested in the long history in broadcast journalism stretching back decades, I did have to confirm what a 'stringer' meant and of course - freelance journalist!
As Jim explains he is not a technical geek so when we got the podcast interview going he concentrated on the substance of being an independent journalist getting a news story and how he has found this new medium in podcasting.

More info on our guest Jim:
I was in the banking business and had three assignments in Ecuador, Chile and Mexico over 7 years. My business career gave me great entrée to local business, government and cultural circles that played well for my journalist sideline.
Mostly print media - Business Latin America, The Economist and The Times. But also did local reporting for the BBC in Ecuador and Chile.
Back Stateside, I used to co-host a current affairs TV show on San Francisco cable called News Europe during the 1990s.
My debut novel Deceit and Dirty Money is available in print and electronic form on Amazon.com. An audio dramatized version entitled Dirty Money is available/downloadable from Free-ebooks.net.
Podcasting is the perfect marriage of the written and spoken word.
Politics, especially in SF and California is another side passion. I was on the State Central Cttee of the California Democratic Party for a few years. My podcast encompasses a host of subjects apart from politics but I would summarize the 98 episodes as current affairs rather than exclusively politics with a SF and California slant.
It is not a partisan podcast. I stick to factual, researched posts and I am light on opinion/editorializing. There’s enough of that all around us. My market niche is independent minded listeners who want to hear both sides of the argument with a good dose of verifiable facts. I always cite my sources at the end of the podcast.
So I needed a guest to help finish off the series and although I'd told Anastasija previously of my plans I didn't ask her directly, but it turns out she was a big fan of the episodes and was happy to come on the show. We had to fit it all around her new baby arrival but in the new year we found the time and as she had listened to many episodes knew the interview format well!

Another contact through LinkedIn, it was hard to first to get something scheduled but after a quick call we got the show in the diary - Steve had just come off a 7 day 12 hour shift run so very happy he was up for it, he has accomplished much over his broadcast career which we talk through.
Before we spoke I did wonder where he was from and its the north east, his story of starting his career in an indoor market in Sunderland was a good opener, the sheer diversity of work he has been involved with is facinating to hear as his advice for new comers.

Brad was one of my replies on LinkedIn, posted in a group for media professionals and figured lighting is another area that I'd like to talk about, after a few emails he was booked for a show, we was trying to include a demonstration but as it's more visual we had to skip it - but we talked for ages anyway.
The main thing that struck me was being in the same trade and the same company for 37 years, its inspiring to hear from people who have committed themselves that long - and all the developments of software, LED's and production shoot experiences was great.

For more info on our guest Brad:
CBC was involved in a variety of lighting advancements such as creating pre visualization software that allowed a lighting console to control the lighting in a 3D computer simulation to pre program looks for the camera. We also created a plug and play studio infrastructure that involved an installed DMX network along with DMX controlled non dim power. We created the worlds first all LED lit news studio in our French Studios in Toronto. After retiring I co created the HS Scope that provides a guideline to calibrate LED lights to the needs of the camera sensors based on the cameras actual electronics chroma signal. I now this is a podcast but I can show the software on the video interview if you would like. I have other video examples but as tis is a podcast i suspect you want it all audio focused. I was also a technical instructor at CBC along with being a Senior Lighting Director and I have been on a wide variety of industry related panels at various tradeshows. I have spoken with people looking to get in the industry in the past and I have a perspective I share with them regarding training etc. they should look to obtain.

For more info on our guest Richard:
Richard Midson is a former news anchor, editor and journalist on UK radio. He’s also a YouTuber who made a show which gained 1.6 million views across it’s episodes. He’s a podcaster and makes a show called “Can I Make a Hit Podcast” and he also used to help prepare the leader of the third largest political group in the European Parliament for media interviews. But Richard’s greatest passion is helping others get heard. He’s always believed that not enough people are getting their stories across in the media. He wants to help everyone ask great questions and answer them too as guests, in order to help them share their stories with the world.
Looking around the various groups for podcast guests who could help the audience with something that's not taught on broadcast courses - learning about you, about purpose and what you want to achieve deep down - that's when I found Leanne.
We talked about the fundamentals that Leanne talks so passionately about, I chose some topics like self-actualisation, about keeping your strength in adversity and taking control of your career. I must have asked the right questions as she answered them with such ease and enthusiasm - even I'm invigorated now!

How do we harness these sign posts and recognise them?
How do people achieve self-actualisation of one's potential
Do you put your trust in something, do you visualise an optimum situation?
Is it not down to simply learning more? Or taking opportunities that arise?
What do you do when you achieve a goal or a dream?
‘How to to keep trying getting that broadcast media career’
if you’re not an academic type how can you make up for this? Does it matter?
where to look for support and encouragement during a long career search?
leaving university can be quite sudden and a vulnerable time - can it be positive?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, what is yours?
What is a measure of success in a career, what should it not be about?

Having known Phil for many years and with is larger than life character he seemed a natural fit to include on the schedule, I wanted somebody to talk about recruitment and with his outgoing character glad he agreed.
We talk about his early days as a 'journo' as he calls it, but he also talks about what he would do differently and advice for candidates to perfect that CV and how he helps coach for interviews. In the out takes his doorbell was going off, fluffed his lines and called me out on my CGI podcast studio pfft!

More information on the guest:
I began my career at Caspian One in 2009, working intensely across the full broadcast chain, delivering on both contract and permanent assignments.
Initially, my focus was targeted to distribution technologies, which as result, built solid grounding for the work I do today with Telco’s in Europe - operating in-and-around video content delivery. I have also worked closely alongside equipment manufacturers, product and technical sales candidates; and it’s this breadth of experience which has developed my unusual, rounded understanding of the industry’s people, products, workflows and technologies.
I’m a tenacious individual who is proud of my work and loyal to the people I support. My strengths also include the capability to identify, access and engage with candidates that have skills which are often in high, competitive demand.
Making connections from nowhere, so just browsing the podcast groups I saw Grace's profile and was up for being a guest - we had a quick call around new years and was intriguing to hear about her background in academic, producing and now in software.
As Grace was a seasoned podcaster the interview flowed really well, we made the 8 hour time difference work out and talked through her journey whilst giving great insight into what may help new comers.

This episode I wanted to find a recent broadcast media graduate, I made some contacts in London and the University I went to in Leeds and eventually I was put in contact with Andy - he said that it came at the right time as he had been back to Uni to tell other upcoming graduates of his experience getting work giving them confidence.
As the show goes on Andy tells us that not only did he find that academic parts was needed for getting a job, it was other soft skills such as making connections and being personable. He tells us the step change in university work to real client projects, also how he managed to complete the course and get a job.

This connection came from out of nowhere really, I was talking with a friend of a friend about a potential podcast show needing guests and coincidentally he was a graduate from a broadcast journalism course and he put me in contact with Michael. After some phone calls he agreed to record one and was enthusiastic about paying it forwards to help the new wave of new comers.
It was my first time talking about journalism specifically and got a real sense of what it's like from Michael's work in the field, whilst all the time weaving advice in for new comers. Also a good talking point on social media where broadcast filters into these new platforms which become new new norm.

For more info on our guest Michael:
Journalist for various B2B clients (including Accounting & Business, Estates Gazette, Money Laundering Bulletin, Utility Week and many others)
Associate Editor for a quarterly trilingual magazine on Greek-Chinese relations and for the strategic business consultants Introducing Leaders.
Athens Correspondent for Press TV and London Correspondent for Greek broadcasters. Expert commentator on Greece with the BBC and ITV.
Executive Producer, Co-Producer and Director for various TV shows including international co-productions. Negotiated production agreements and sales; designed and oversaw budget, wrote script, recruited cast and crew, acted as line producer.
Looking through the podcasting groups I found people in broadcast media few and far between, then by luck I saw Jaimie offering to guest and the part of the industry she works in is very much near the talent - and some razzmatazz of Hollywood, so I was very happy to have her on the show.
For the online studio interview she had a black background with a boom style mic and had an audition feel to it! She gave me the inside track on dealing with actors and actresses and how they make it in the film and TV shoots and working with production crews, very insightful.

I'm a top notch Casting Director! I can find talent for your commercial, music video, short film, webisode, student film, feature, or anything else you need talent for. I can work within most budgets. Check out much of my production work at www.jaynefilms.com - I'm always available for hire in the industry. I mainly work as UPM, Production Coordinator, and Casting Director - but on a good day I'll PA for you if you need one!
I was looking for different places to find ideal guests and I wanted someone who worked in a technical capacity this time so I thought let's try LinkedIn groups and Jose was keen so over the festive period we recorded the show - we had to reschedule on the same day due to time differences but we got there in the end.
It was a great to understand how Jose got where he is now and a lot of the work he does I can relate to so found it fascinating how he started in sound and with drive and passion managed to make it to the heights of broadcast in another country.
