Episode: Hacking the Middle East, with Ahmed Al-Rawi
Pub date: 2022-06-27
Notes from Over The Wire Podcast:
Looking at how different actors in the Middle East, from states to activists, use hacking as a form of political disruption. Nation-states as well as their affiliated hacking groups like cyber warriors employ hacking as offensive and defensive tools against other nation-states. Some states use hacking to target their own citizens. But there are also politically independent hackers who target their own government or ordinary citizens.
This week we are joined by Ahmed Al-Rawi who has written a book called Cyberwars in the Middle East, published by Rutgers University Press in 2021.
The book looks at how different actors in the Middle East, from states to activists, use hacking as a form of political disruption.
Ahmed is an Assistant Professor of News, Social Media, and Public Communication at Simon Fraser University.
