It's that time of the season where we take a dive into a cold case. This one is unique in that we will also tell the stories of Levon Brooks and Kennedy Brewer, 2 men whose lives were changed unjustly while the crimes against Courtney and Christine went unsolved. This is a story and project, we hope to spread awareness and offer support.

In continuation of our recent series on Black World History we are revisiting the history of Aboriginal people and Australia. There is so much history we weren’t able to cover and still aren’t able to dive into but we felt this one needed a deeper dive to better understand the long history of the Aboriginal History and their journey to be treated as citizens. This one is an amazing history lesson, and you won’t want to miss this.

Disclaimer: Shayla and I are not historians, we just find value in the history of the diaspora. Although we would love access to more in depth historical artifacts to validate our findings on Google. Google is all we have, but we wouldn’t be Melanated Intellects if we didn’t dive into the stories of the African Diaspora anyway. With this said, please enjoy and allow this to spark your curiosity to do your own research and dive in further to these important moments/times and chapters in history.

Who Killed Malcolm X? A question many of us, although there have been arrests, are still unfortunately left with. In this episode, Shayla and I unpack the profound Netflix Documentary: Who Killed Malcolm X along with other history we have learned in our research over the years of the life of Malcolm. We also discuss the facts and circumstances around his murder and why we consider it to still be a cold case. If you have not watched the documentary, we provide a lot of information but we don’t come close to the documentary so it is highly recommended you still watch it but regardless, I definitely encourage you to take a listen, you won’t want to miss this one as there are still so many questions.

It carried 110 Africans, and the documentary also highlights the stories of the descendants of these individuals. TRIGGER WARNING: We will be periodically dedicating an episode to a melanated cold case throughout the season as we hope to shed more light on these stories. In March of 1991, nearly two weeks after the Rodney King beating, LaTasha Harlins lost her life. She was killed by Soon Ja Du, a Korean convenience store owner over the purchase of a bottle of orange juice. Soon Ja Du was convicted and found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and recommended to serve 10 years in state prison by the jury. However, Judge Joyce Karlin decided to give her a lenient sentence of $500 fine, 400 hours of community service, and 5 years of probation with no jail time. Due to the timing of the incident LaTasha’s case did not receive the media attention that Rodney King’s did.

Also, in this episode we decided to speak about the surprising most recent updates in Breonna Taylor’s case, how we feel about all the recent discoveries, and our feelings about both of these cases even though they happened nearly 30 years apart. Make sure you click on this episode. Let us know what you think by filling our new survey below!

TRIGGER WARNING: This book was on our summer reading list, and we couldn’t wait to share our thoughts with our Intellects community. It was a fascinating read. Dr. Joy DeGruy defines Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome or PTSS as a condition that exists when a population has experienced multigenerational trauma resulting from centuries of slavery and continues to experience oppression and institutionalized racism today. Added to this condition is a belief that the benefits of the society in which they live are not accessible to them. In this episode, we walk our listeners through the first few sections of the book discussing everything from how our history impacts our children in the classroom to why relationships are so important within the African American community. We unpack so much in this episode, but we are just getting started/ Make sure you tune in to part 2 & 3 of this discussion as well. TRIGGER WARNING: We will be periodically dedicating an episode to a melanated cold case throughout the season as we hope to shed more light on these stories. In 2013 Kendrick Johnson, a 17-year-old honor roll student and athlete, was found dead in a rolled-up gym mat at his GA high school. His case was closed in 4 months and ruled an accident. Recently the case has been re-opened and we felt Kendrick and his story deserved some additional spotlight. In this episode, we discuss everything from the details of what happened the day he died, to the confusion and mishandling of his case. There is a lot to question when it comes to this case from the cause of death to the person(s) of interest. The inconsistencies and discrepancies are clear indications of a cover up. Please click on this episode so that as many people as possible know Kendrick’s story.

It doesn’t need to be Black History Month for us to speak about Black History. This will be the second of many in the “It’s Not Black History Month” series. We will have several episodes like this throughout this season, each focusing on a different topic. Our second topic is about the Boukman Revolt! Boukman Dutty, whose real name is unknown, was the leader of an uprising that eventually sparked the Haitian Revolution. He was intelligent, strategic, and a voodoo priest. His uprising was the most explosive slave rebellion in Caribbean and American history in terms of scale and damage. He was a trailblazer for those that would follow in his footsteps like Toussaint L’Ouverture and Jean Jacques Desalines. His story is a powerful one! Make sure you check out this brief history lesson!

It doesn’t need to be Black History Month for us to speak about Black History. This will be the first of many in the “It’s Not Black History Month” series. We will have several episodes like this throughout this season with each focusing on a different topic. Our first topic is about Black Russians! Did you know that in the 1930s many African Americans left the U.S. to start a new life in the Soviet Union? We didn’t know this until recently and we had such a good time doing research for this episode. The stories of the black pioneers and their descendants are beautiful expressions of a black experience very different from those that chose to stay in the U.S. We discuss everything from their journey, the success and wealth they found in the Soviet Union and the current state of Black Russians today. We hope you learn something new in this episode or perhaps just a refresher of history you already knew, either way you don’t want to miss this episode.

Critical Race Theory:

This episode came highly requested, and we wanted to make sure we did the topic justice by doing our research and presenting both sides of the argument. There is a lot to dissect when it comes to Critical Race Theory and whether or not it should be taught in schools. We start this episode with a short lesson on the difference between Critical Race Theory and the teaching of black history. We tackle everything from our opinion on if we think it should be taught in schools to how it should be implemented if state legislation allows. We don’t agree with each other on this topic but that is what our platform is all about. As always, we encourage respectful further discussion on this issue. Grief is one of the most difficult processes for a person or group of people to experience. You can never predict how the 7 stages will present themselves in yourself and in others. We have both learned a lot about grief in the past year and we are here to be open and vulnerable. In this episode we examine grief from three angles. First, grieving of your past self, because leaving the old “you” behind is quite the emotional undertaking. Second, grief in the black community as we mourn all those whose lives have been taken so unjustly and third, the loss of loved ones we hold dear to our heart. You definitely don’t want to miss this deep and ever evolving discussion.
