Ray 'Ben' Studevent was a mixed-race child whose unique look led him to fight a racial identity crisis his entire life. Each time he entered a room, he had to decide whether it was better to be Black or White. His personal and career journeys ebbed and flowed, taking him to prison, fatherhood and gigs in comedy clubs, modelling and stock-market research.
On this episode, Ray talks to Delia about how, being born to a White, heroin-addicted mother and a Black, violently alcoholic father affected his life. And how his latest book, “Black Sheep” dedicated to his aunt Lemell, who became his mother, showed him that although he loved and appreciated her, he regrets he didn’t show her just how much when she was alive.
