Hello, everyone! Welcome to another Dicas de inglês Podcast. My name is Alisson and I'm your English teacher. Today we're going to talk about a phrasal verb that is commonly used when we want to talk about starting a new thing: "take up".

"Take up" is a very versatile phrasal verb that can be used in a variety of situations. Together, we’re gonna look at how to use it to talk about when you want to start a new activity.

For example, if you want to start learning a new language, you can say: "I'm thinking about taking up French". Or, if you want to start playing an instrument, you can say: "I want to take up the guitar". “Take up” in this case, means to start. So, we could rephrase the first sentence like this, “I'm thinking about starting French” meaning you want to start learning it.

When you use "take up" in this way, it is followed by the activity you want to start. So, you can "take up" tennis, painting, or photography, for example.

How can we use “take up” in the past? Well, it’s simple, you just need to say “took up”. For example, “Last year, my friend took up yoga.” It means that last year, she started doing yoga.

Now personally speaking I can say that two weeks ago I took up Spanish. So, it means that since two weeks ago I have been studying Spanish because I took it up. I started doing Spanish lessons.

Well, that's all for today's episode. Thank you for listening! And if you enjoyed this episode and want to learn more English tips, make sure to follow me at @dicasdeingles. See you next time!

"Hello, everyone! Welcome to another episode of Dicas de inglês Podcast. My name is Alisson and I'm your English teacher."

Hoje, vamos aprender como dar sugestões em inglês usando a palavra "should" e a expressão "why don't you". Essa palavra e essa expressão são muito úteis quando você quer sugerir algo a alguém. Vamos começar com a palavra "should".

"Should", como já falei, é uma palavra que usamos para dar conselhos. Quando usamos "should" em uma sugestão, estamos aconselhando a pessoa a fazer algo. Por exemplo: Se seu amigo tem uma vida muito sedentária, você pode aconselhá-lo a fazer exercícios.

You should do exercise . (Você deveria fazer exercícios.)

Veja a pronúncia da palavra “should”. Perceba que nós não pronunciamos a letra L. “Should”.

You should do exercise . (Você deveria fazer exercícios.)

Agora imagine que alguém fará uma prova e ela não está estudando o suficiente. Então, você pode dizer:

You should study harder. (Você deveria estudar mais.)

O legal dessa palavra é que você não precisa fazer nenhuma conjugação. Basta você usar should mais o que você acha que a outra pessoa deveria fazer.

You should study

You should relax

You should go

Agora, vamos falar sobre "why don't you". Essa expressão é usada para dar sugestões de maneira amigável e casual. Ela significa “Por que você não...” Vamos repetir comigo: Why don’t you....?

Imagine agora que alguém anda trabalhando muito e não tira nenhum minuto para descansar. Ela se queixou dizendo que anda muito stressada. Você pode dizer: Por que você não tira um dia de folga e relaxa? Em inglês:

Why don't you take a day off and relax? (Por que você não tira um dia de folga e relaxa?)

Dessa vez, imagine que alguém está te pedindo sugestões sobre o que fazer hoje a noite. Você pode dizer “Por que você não assiste um filme hoje à noite? Em inglês:

Why don't you watch a movie tonight? (Por que você não assiste um filme hoje à noite?)

Bem, isso é tudo por hoje! Espero que tenham aprendido como dar sugestões em inglês usando "should" e "why don't you". Se quiserem mais dicas de inglês, sigam-me no Instagram @dicasdeingles. Thank you for listening and I’ll see you next time!

Hello everyone, and welcome to another Dicas de Inglês podcast. My name is Alisson, and I'm your English teacher. Today, I want to talk to you about two ways to practice and improve your speaking skills.

The first way to improve your speaking is to practice with a language exchange partner. This is someone who is learning your native language and is willing to speak with you in English. You can find language exchange partners through online forums or language exchange apps such as TANDEM. I will write the name of this app in the description of this podcast. When you speak with your partner, make sure to focus on speaking in English and correcting each other's mistakes. This will help both you improve your fluency.

The second way to improve your speaking is to record yourself speaking and listen back to it. This can be a bit difficult at first, but it's a great way to identify your weaknesses and areas for improvement. You can record yourself speaking in English and then listen back to it to hear how you sound. This will help you identify any pronunciation or grammar mistakes that you may not have identified while speaking. You can also ask someone who also speaks English to listen to it and give you some feedback. You can also practice speaking on specific topics or with specific vocabulary to help you prepare for real-life situations.

If I could give you some ideas on how to record yourself, I would suggest finding some questions on the internet that you can answer. Questions such as: Where are you from? What do you like to do in your free time? What did you do yesterday? So, get these questions and answer them for yourself. While you’re answering them, record yourself and listen to the recording later on. If you are shy, you can record yourself when no one is at home.

It's important to practice speaking regularly and consistently, even if it's just a few minutes a day. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you'll become speaking in English.

Well, there are many ways to practice and improve your speaking skills. Find a language exchange partner or record yourself speaking to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Remember to practice regularly, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Alright! That’s all for today. Thank you for listening and I'll see you next time.

Hello everyone, this is Alisson, and welcome to another episode of Dicas de Inglês podcast. Today, we're going to talk about a topic that is essential for anyone learning English, and that is the use of the word "like" as a filler word.

So, let's start with the basics. Filler words are words or sounds that we use in our speech to give us time to think or to keep the conversation flowing smoothly. They are often used unconsciously and can vary depending on the language and culture.

In English, "like" is one of the most common filler words. It is often used by native speakers in everyday conversations, and it can be a great tool for non-native speakers to sound more natural when speaking.

You might have heard people say things like "um" or "ah" when they're thinking or trying to articulate their thoughts. Well, "like" is a very common filler word in English, especially in American English.

So, how can you use "like" as a filler word? Let's take a look at some examples.

Example 1: "So, like, I was walking down the street, and like, I saw this really cute dog, and like, I couldn't help but stop and pet it."

In this example, "like" is used to give the speaker time to think about what they are going to say next. It also adds emphasis to the speaker's words and makes their speech sound more conversational.

Example 2: "I'm, like, really excited to go to the concert tonight. It's, like, my favorite band and I've been, like, waiting for this for months."

In this example, "like" is used to express the speaker's emotions and to add emphasis to their words. It also helps to create a more casual and conversational tone.

In Portuguese the equivalent is “tipo”. So, let’s say you were thinking about something and you say, “tipo, tipo”. So, this word in English is “like”.

Well, that's it for today's episode of Dicas de Inglês Podcast. I hope you found this tip helpful, and don't forget to practice using "like" as a filler word in your own conversations. Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time!

Hello everyone and welcome to today's podcast. I'm Alisson, your English teacher, and today I'm gonna be teaching you the meaning and usage of the idiom "walk on eggshells."

"To walk on eggshells" is an idiom that we use when we want to describe a situation where we need to be very careful about what we say or do, in order to avoid offending someone or making a situation worse.

For example, imagine that you are having a conversation with a friend who is going through a difficult time. You want to offer support, but you don't want to say the wrong thing and upset this person any further. In this case, you would need to "walk on eggshells" when choosing your words, in order to avoid making the situation worse.

Now, let's look at some examples of how we can use "walk on eggshells" in a sentence.

Example 1: I have to "walk on eggshells" around my boss because he gets easily offended.

Example 2: When talking to my grandmother, I have to "walk on eggshells" because she is very sensitive.

Example 3: I feel like I'm "walking on eggshells" around my roommate because we had an argument yesterday.

So, that's the meaning and usage of the idiom "walk on eggshells." Remember, it is used to describe situations where we need to be very careful about what we say or do, in order to avoid offending someone or making a situation worse.

Well, I hope you found this podcast useful. Thank you for listening and I'll see you in the next episode.

Hey, everyone! Welcome back to another episode of "Dicas de inglês", the podcast where I give you tips to help you improve your English. I'm Alisson, your English teacher, and today we're gonna be talking about the expression "just for the sake of it".

Now, this is a phrase that you may have heard before, but you may not be entirely sure what it means. So, let's break it down.

Firstly, "just" means "only" or "simply". So, when we say "just for the sake of it", we mean "only for the sake of it" or "simply for the sake of it".

But what does "for the sake of it" mean? Well, "for the sake of" means "for the purpose of" or "for the benefit of". So, when we say "just for the sake of it", we mean "just for the purpose of it" or "just for the benefit of it".

When we put it all together, "just for the sake of it" means "doing something only for the purpose of doing it" or "doing something without any particular reason or benefit".

For example, let's say you're at a party and someone offers you a piece of cake. You might say, "Sure, I'll have a piece of cake, just for the sake of it". This means you don't really want the cake, but you'll have it anyway, just because it's there and you don't have a specific reason not to.

Another example could be someone who takes up a new hobby "just for the sake of it". They don't have any particular reason for doing it, but they just wanna try something new and see how it goes.

This time, let’s listen to my friend Rachel talking about herself by using the phrase “just for the sake of it”. With her, you will get plenty of examples of how to use this phrase.

I often find myself doing things just for the sake of it. Whether it's taking a different route to work, trying a new recipe, or even rearranging my furniture, I enjoy the feeling of shaking things up and trying something new. Of course, not everything I do just for the sake of it is successful or enjoyable, but that's not really the point. The point is to embrace a sense of spontaneity and adventure in my day-to-day life. Sometimes, the smallest changes can lead to the biggest rewards, and I like to think that by trying new things just for the sake of it, I'm opening myself up to a world of possibilities.

So, that's what "just for the sake of it" means. It's a phrase that we use when we don't have a particular reason for doing something, but we do it anyway.

And that's it for today's episode of "Dicas de inglês" podcast. I hope you found this explanation helpful and that you'll be able to use the expression "just for the sake of it" in your own conversations. Thanks for listening and don't forget to follow me on Instagram for more English tips. See you next time!

You’re listening to another Dicas de inglês Podcast! This is Alisson, your English teacher, and today we are going to learn how to use the phrase "I'd rather" to talk about preferences. This phrase is very common in English and it's important to know how to use it correctly.

First of all, let's look at the structure of "I'd rather". "I'd" is a contraction of "I would", and "rather" means "prefer". So, when we say "I'd rather", we are saying "I would prefer".

Here's an example: "I'd rather have pizza for dinner." This means that I prefer to have pizza for dinner over any other food.

Now, let's look at some more examples to see how "I'd rather" is used in everyday conversations.

Example 1:

Person A: "Do you want to go to the movies tonight?"

Person B: "I'd rather stay home and watch Netflix."

In this example, the second person is saying that they prefer to stay home and watch Netflix instead of going to the movies.

Example 2:

Person A: "Do you want to go to the beach or the park?"

Person B: "I'd rather go to the park. It's closer."

In this example, the second person is saying that she prefers to go to the park because it's closer than the beach.

So, as you can see, "I'd rather" is a very useful phrase to express preferences. You can use it in many different situations to let people know what you prefer.

Remember that "I'd" is a contraction of "I would", so you can also say "I would rather" instead of "I'd rather". It means the same thing.

That's it for today's lesson. I hope you learned how to use "I'd rather" to talk about your preferences. Keep practicing and using this phrase in your conversations. And see you next time!

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another English learning podcast. Today, we're going to talk about the phrasal verb "end up". This is a very common phrasal verb in English, and it's important to learn how to use it correctly if you want to sound more natural.

So, what does "end up" mean? Well, "end up" is used to describe a situation where you do something that you didn't plan or expect to do. It's often used to describe an unexpected outcome or result of a situation.

Let me give you some examples:

1."I was planning to go to the park, but I ended up staying home all day because it rained."

2."She was trying to find a new job, but she ended up getting promoted at her current job."

3."We were lost in the city and ended up in a neighborhood we'd never been to before."

As you can see, "end up" is used to talk about something that happens unexpectedly, often as a result of circumstances beyond our control.

Another important thing to note about "end up" is that it's always followed by an "-ing" verb. For example, "I ended up watching a movie" or "We ended up eating pizza for dinner."

So, that's it for today's podcast! Practice using "end up" in your own conversations, and see how much more natural your English sounds. Thanks for listening, and have a good one.
