Why is Covenant Theology so Important? How does the New Testament interpret the Old Testament? Join us this week for Emmaus Members' Podcast as we discuss the practical side of Covenant Theology.Pastor Ron's Lectures on the Covenants: https://soundcloud.com/emmausbiblechurch/chapter-7-gods-covenant-pt-1?in=emmausbiblechurch/sets/1689-baptist-confessionHistorical Quotes on the Covenant Epistle of Barnabas, Christ suffered on their behalf in order that they might inherit the promises and be “constituted heirs through him”. Christ was manifested so that he might redeem his people, and that “He might by His word enter into a covenant with us”. In this way the church became the spiritual temple of the Lord. Irenaeus of Lyons, The faith of Abraham and the other Old Testament saints was identical with that of Christian believers. Christ came for one as much as for the other. Both were justified by faith through Christ, who gathered “into the one faith of Abraham those who, from either covenant, are eligible for God‟s building”. Abraham “did in himself prefigure the two covenants, in which some have sown, while others have reaped”.Clement of Alexandria, “There is but one, true, ancient, universal Church, one in substance, and idea, in origin, in pre- eminence, and it collects into the unity of one faith those from both covenants, so that in fact there is rather one covenant manifest in different periods by the will of God”.Augustine of Hippo“Now it is to be observed that two things are promised to Abraham, the one, that his seed should possess the land of Canaan… but the other far more excellent, not about the carnal but the spiritual seed, through which he is the father, not of the one Israelite nation, but of all nations who follow the footprints of his faith, which was first promised in these words, “And in thee shall all tribes of the earth be blessed.”The first “was fulfilled through David, and Solomon his son, whose kingdom was extended over the whole promised space; for they subdued all those nations, and made them tributary. And thus, under those kings, the seed of Abraham was established in the land of promise according to the flesh, that is, in the land of Canaan”The second and more excellent, “revealed in the New Testament, was about to be fulfilled through the incarnation of Christ.” Andrew Woosley (Modern) First, they all used the idea of the covenant as a unity, and explain the differences, between the Old and New Testaments. Secondly, they saw the covenant soteriologically as one eternal covenant in Christ manifest throughout all ages from the time of Adam. Thirdly, there was a dual emphasis in their presentation of the covenant. It was a unilateral promise of grace given sovereignly by God, but it also required a response of faith and obedience from man, though this response was only by divine enabling and not by any natural inherent power resident in fallen man. Fourthly, in the case of Augustine, there was a definite use of the idea of covenant in a legal sense, though still in a context of “grace”, with respect to Adam in his unfallen state. Finally, again in Augustine especially, there was a close association of the covenant with baptism, so that it is erroneous to locate the origin of the idea of the covenant in this connection in the Zurich reformation.

Big idea: Our joy in the house of the Lord should cause us to long for the eternal house of the Lord.
Three truths about the house of the Lord: 1. The Christian's desire for the house of the Lord (1–2) 2. The security of the house of the Lord (3–5) 3. The peace of the house of the Lord (6–9)

Pastor Ron provided the following clarification: "A question was asked: Was it the Moral Law that Jesus was referring to in Matthew 5:27 when he said 'Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them' (Mt. 5:17 ESV)?
"My response was 'yes'. However that was only partially true. 'Law and prophets' is a term that generally refers to the entire Old Testament not just the Moral Law (summarized in the Ten Commandments). Jesus fulfilled all the Old Testament in one way or another. It all points to him. At the same time, the Moral Law is included in the Old Testament. Jesus did not abolish the OT nor did he do away with the Moral Law. He fulfilled both. But then he begins to expound specifically on the Moral Law. We know that because he begins to explain the real meaning of two commandments from the Ten Commandments in the following verses namely 'adultery' and 'murder' (Mt. 5:21-30)."

Last month during the GC Leaders' Retreat, Ron gave an exceptional lesson for a biblical lens of reconciliation from Galatians 6:1-2. In light of a culture that is volatile and growingly incapable of pursuing restoration and sacrifice for the good of the other, Ron's teaching helps us as a church to put on a gospel lens as we continue to seek to love, serve, and be reconciled with one another as we grow in the likeness of Christ corporately.

The Gospel According to Mark, Introductory Session
Please note: Due to the nature of this course (more study than lecture) and the distance from the microphone of the audio source (with frequent audience participation), the introduction is the only class of this course which will be available online or recorded going forward.
ABS aims to equip men and women with the necessary tools to engage in the mission of the church. Beginning January 7th we will start a new quarter of Adult Bible School. Emmaus Leadership will lead an inductive Bible study through the Gospel According to Mark.
The format of this class will be somewhat different than prior classes. Where the former classes were more lecture in nature this will be more interactive. The teacher will guide the discussion by asking questions regarding context, observation, meaning and application. The purpose of this study reaches beyond spending time together in God’s Word. We want to help you develop skills for personal Bible Study and sharing with others so you can engage in the mission of the church.

Foundations of Biblical Counseling, Session 12
In the midst of a therapeutic culture where counseling has become a formal, professional discipline, we find the Scripture admonishing all believers to be "filled with all knowledge, competent to counsel one another." How do we counsel each other, and how do we become "competent" to do so? Surprisingly, we have all been given the power, the training, and the ability to help each other to struggle well and grow to be more like Christ Jesus.

New Testament Survey, Session 28
The purpose and summary of this course is: 1. To understand the big picture of each book of the New Testament. (More like a flight across the country than a family cross-country road trip.) We will avoid getting caught up in the minor details, but we’ll see the scenery change as we fly over different books. 2. To understand the continuity between the books in the NT. 3. To realize the promises God has kept to His people from the OT. 4. To hear God speak to us today through His Word and so to be challenged in our lives.
Like the Old Testament Survey, this course is structured to discuss different aspects of the King and the Kingdom. We will not be looking at every detail of every book we are studying, but we’ll profit from a better understanding of the broader picture.

Fear of Man, Session 6
The purpose of this course is not to give you the tools for a boosted self-esteem, but rather to explore: 1. What the fear of man looks like in our lives and in our culture. 2. What we have been called to (fearing God and loving others). 3. How we have lost this focus. 4. How we can begin to reestablish the fear of God in our lives and regain a right perspective about ourselves and others.
We’ll explore the various ways we most often tend to be controlled by fear of man. Only as we begin to categorize our struggles in this area are we able to see the paths that Biblical repentance must travel. Overcoming the fear of others is not something we can accomplish on our own. There is One who didn’t give in to the fear of man and gave Himself up so that we also could fear God rather than be enslaved to the fear of man.

Old Testament Survey, Session 26
Do the first 39 books of our Bible sometimes seem distant or foreign to you? Perhaps even obsolete? Or are they just a rulebook for our lives? A collection of stories with moral lessons? Or is it something more? In OT Survey, we’ll take 26 weeks to look at the first half of the OT as we learn to understand what it is, what it means, how it points us to Christ, and how it matters to Christians today.
Basics IV: Meeting with God, Session 5
By illustrating why the disciplines are important, showing how each one will help you grow in godliness, and offering practical suggestions for cultivating them, the Meeting with God course will provide you with a refreshing opportunity to become more like Christ and grow in character and maturity.

Basics III: Two Ways to Live - A Gospel Presentation for Evangelism, Session 7
At the most basic level, Two Ways to Live is simply a memorable summary of the Christian gospel. Or to put it more accurately, it is the Christian gospel including some of its necessary presuppositions and background. In the New Testament, the word ‘gospel’ usually refers to the proclamation of Jesus Christ crucified. It is the announcement that God's kingdom has arrived in the person of his Son, the powerful Messiah, who inaugurates his worldwide reign by dying and rising again so that repentance and forgiveness can be preached to all nations. This Jesus Christ now rules at God's right hand, from where he will come again to judge.
You will see that the six points not only provide a brief summary of the whole story of the Bible, but fit logically together as a coherent set of propositions: 1. God the creator; humanity ruling under his authority. 2. Humanity rebels, wishing to run things its own way. 3. God judges (and will judge) humanity for this rebellion. 4. In his love, God sends Jesus to die as an atoning sacrifice. 5. In his power, God raises Jesus to life as ruler and judge. 6. This presents us with a challenge to repent and believe.
