Dr Cyd Cowley discusses news in fusion, and whether the world is ready. Cyd is a CDT alumnus now working at digiLab, which has been chosen as a partner for the STEP project specialising in AI.
In week 5 Professor Russell Goodall welcomed over 20 first year students in the 2024 cohort to the University of Sheffield, for a week of classroom-based learning about Leadership and Researcher Skills.
The students learnt about how to frame research questions, project planning and management, scientific communication methods, structuring a research paper, data visualisation, research ethics in publishing and networking skills.
The sessions were supported by current and former PhD students from the Advanced Metallic Systems CDT at Sheffield. During a lunchtime outreach activity, they practiced networking with ‘A’ level students who had recently participated in the Nuffield Research Placement scheme and were presenting their research posters, while also engaging with the Metallic’s PhD students in more depth.
This year we revised the programme to take account of the latest developments in Fusion. We added new lectures on the design of tokamaks and inertial fusion power plants (Ryan Wagner, IAEA and Jame Darline, First Light Fusion) and the development of design codes (Thomas Davis, Oxford Sigma). Niek Lopes Cardozo returned with his thought-provoking talk on the Socio-Economics of Fusion: i.e. looking at how fusion energy compares to other sources in terms of public opinion and cost, and how we can influence that. We finished with a very well-received question and answer session with Sir Ian Chapman, CEO at UKAEA, focusing on the UK Fusion Programme in the international ladscape.

‘I recently won the Ogden Trust Outreach Award for Postgraduate Student Ambassador for the work I did through the Fusion CDT’s outreach team. We went into schools in the Gainsborough/Retford area to promote/introduce fusion energy (they are building the STEP reactor nearby). I ran materials workshops for primary school children and a planetarium style ‘Sundome’ presentation for secondary school children and members of the public. We aimed to develop a love of science in students and spark curiosity. Interesting discussions were had with members of the public looking to learn more about fusion energy and the STEP programme.’

Matty WarnerBefore arriving at the CDT induction week, I will admit that I was nervous about a few things. It is only natural before a big change in life, the start of a new chapter, to be apprehensive about what the future holds. Thinking about how much work lies ahead, both with collaborative opportunities and the lonely hours sat in front of a screen, can be both exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure. Thankfully, once the induction week had begun, many of initial nerves were alleviated and my excitement to start a PhD in fusion energy grew substantially. This was mostly due to the amazing people who made the induction what it was, both the incredible organisers and my wonderful new colleagues.
I have already alluded to the fact that parts of a PhD will inevitably be quite an isolating experience, due to the need to submit an individual thesis at the end of your research. This is why collaboration is so important and being introduced to life as a PhD student with a cohort of people all sharing the same passion for fusion energy was an immediate reminder that this is a team effort. For example, there will be people doing entirely different projects that at some point may use a similar experimental or computational technique and working through a problem together could assist both your personal work and theirs. Using the old adage ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’, seemingly insurmountable problems could be reduced to 10% of their original size by sharing knowledge with the brilliant cohort of students starting this year. This collaboration between PhD students working all over the country will prove invaluable to becoming a better researcher and the induction week helped to reinforce the idea that there will always be help available whenever it is needed.
Aside from the benefits of meeting people in similar academic situations, the induction week also offered plenty of time to get to know colleagues on a more personal level. From coffee breaks in between introductory talks and lectures to conversations during shared meal times, it was great to have the opportunity to find out about everyone’s respective journeys to the CDT and compare the paths taken and the skills we’d gained along the way. These conversations particularly highlighted the advantages that a diversity of perspectives has within a work environment, as everyone can bring their own unique experiences to tackle a problem which will ultimately help to solve a wide range of issues throughout our different research projects. Getting to know my colleagues on a level beyond our academic pursuits will undoubtedly enhance my personal PhD experience, and I’m sure everyone in the cohort would also share this sentiment.
Speaking of getting to know everyone better, our first collaboration took place on the Wednesday afternoon in the form of a team building activity. From attempting to direct a golf ball into the centre of a toilet seat through an intricate pipe network to racing to be the fastest human hamster wheel, we were put into teams to compete in a variety of activities where effective teamwork was the aim of the game. This provided an opportunity to work with new people in a more relaxed setting than the intensity of a research environment and allowed us to form stronger networks in our respective teams.
Overall, I would say that an induction week like this should be essential for starting any research project as it presented the PhD in the context of a team, rather than an individual pursuit, highlighting a clear support network for the duration of our studies. It also means that we have an established connection going forward into the taught modules that will benefit our studies of fusion energy. Discovering the many unique reasons why being a part of fusion research is important to each person in the CDT provided me with extra intrinsic motivation for my studies that I didn’t know I needed. The main point I keep coming back to is just how much the people at the induction week created such a great experience for me personally. I already feel as though I have met a group of people who will substantially increase both the quality of my work and the quality of my PhD experience, and I only hope that I can do the same for them.
Sean BegganArriving at a Café Nero tucked behind Leeds Train Station, filled with a mixture of nerves and excitement, there were about a dozen twenty-somethings all eagerly waiting to be picked up by the coach and taken to Oulton Hall to begin our CDT induction week.
We pile into the already half full coach at 11am to join the rest of our new cohort who had travelled down from the York Plasma Institute. Everyone was friendly, chatty and in good spirits which helped to settle my nerves. Only a short 30-minute journey and we arrive at Oulton Hall.
After dropping our bags and having a delicious lunch, we entered the Hotel’s Repton Room which would become very familiar to us over the course of the week, spending up to six hours in there each day. Our first activity: an icebreaker – going around the room find one other individual with whom only you share a fact and then finding a fact which is unique to only yourself. My favourite shared fact: Ryan and Ryan’s common fact was they were both called Ryan.
At this point I should mention that the induction was being led by Katy, the Fusion CDT manager and Russell, one of the Sheffield based academics helping to oversee the CDT, both of whom were brilliant throughout the week. Having shared lunch with them a few times throughout the week, they are both clearly very passionate about the CDT and extremely easy to talk to.
They led the majority of the talks throughout the week. Covering from the simple such as “Why do a PhD?” to more thoughtful topics such as “Expectations and Goal setting” and then finally to the more serious topics such as “Responsible Research and Innovation and Trusted Research”.
The remainder of the sessions were focused around the more technical aspects of the programme. Our first task: get Python up and running on our new laptops provided by the CDT – this was trickier than you’d imagine for a room full of STEM degrees. Following on from this was the maths refresher courses led by Arka, a Post-Doc researcher at the YPI. He was a brilliant explainer and took us through some complicated topics including Maxwell’s Equations of Electromagnetism, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Tensor Notation.
Finally, we had a session led by Gillian Arnold, an information technology leader and diversity and inclusion consultant. She led us through an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) workshop which was very insightful. It allowed us to be aware of each of our own inherent biases we have each developed throughout our lives, then taught us to recognise and be conscious of these biases and how we can overcome them.
However, the week wasn’t all just being talked at for hours on end. After the EDI training workshop, we had an afternoon of outdoor team building exercises. We made our way down to the front of the hotel where we were met by four toilet seats, each placed directly in front of a camping chair, surrounded by an array of materials: guttering pipes, string, crates, and more. The task: to build a track using the surrounding equipment which would maximise the time taken for a golf ball to travel from the camping chair and ending in the toilet seat. An extra 10 seconds would be added to your time if your team could also create a mechanism which would close the toilet seat as the golf ball entered.
We were split into four teams and given 35 minutes to construct our tracks. The time flew by and before we knew it, it was time to test our builds! Unfortunately, there were mixed results. We had a couple of false starts, the ball getting stuck halfway, even a DNF. However, one team dominated the challenge by not only taking the most time for the golf ball to travel, but they were also the only team to successfully create a working mechanism for the toilet seat to close – absolute result!
The golf ball puzzle was just the start, following this were an array of other exercises including the Tower of Hanoi rings problem, the mastermind board game with coloured pins, and for any Die Hard 3 fans the water jug problem which Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson have to solve to stop a bomb going off – luckily for us the stakes weren’t quite so high. After about six or seven activities the teams were tallied up and medals awarded to the teams in 1st, 2nd and 3rd before we all got a CDT photo.
Finally on Thursday evening, after a jammed packed week of introductions, maths refresher, training, and more we decided to organise a social as a new CDT cohort. We got taxis into Leeds town centre and went to a few bars and played some games of pool to varying levels of success. I called it a night a 1am but some braver souls continued.
Friday morning, remarkably, everyone made it down to breakfast on time despite the late night. We all then once again piled onto the coach at 10am to be taken back to Leeds train station. However, this time unsurprisingly everyone was a little less energetic. Overall, the induction week was a great success and really helped us all to gel as a cohort.
Each year the Fusion CDT collaborates with UK Atomic Energy Authority to organise an open day for prospective postgraduate students. While Fusion is the headline topic, this spans many research areas that encompass plasma physics, materials science, instrumentation and advanced engineering/technologies. It links to fields as diverse as astrophysics, advanced manufacturing and nuclear energy.
The event provides an opportunity for students to tour the exciting fusion facilities at Culham and to speak to representatives from several universities who will present their Fusion PhD or Masters opportunities.

The talks at the open day will be live streamed to one of the Fusion CDT university campuses in the north of England (York). If you are not able to attend the event in person, you can register to watch the live streamed talks and speak to Fusion CDT students in York instead. However, attending in person will maximize your opportunity to talk to universities and to see the exciting fusion facilities at Culham.
In 2024 welcomed speakers and delegates to the historic York Guildhall in the centre of York, for our usual mix of lectures and discussions on fusion technology and networking events. Our panel session this year was “The Future of Fusion”.

The programme will see some updates to reflect the changes in the fusion landscape as we move towards commerical fusion. We also welcome a new univesity to the collaboration, the University of Sheffield.

Shortly after starting their doctoral journeys, the cohort of 22 students came together for the first time in mid-October in York. But before getting fully into the team discussions, we first had fun together exploring the beautiful city of York. For some nice teambuilding, the CDT cohort visited Mindlock Escape Games’ escape rooms just beside Clifford’s Tower. Divided into teams of 4-5, the students pooled together their smarts to make it out in time before the other teams, and all the teams were successfully able to escape. It is obviously more value for money to spend the entire hour inside the room, so my team and I [strategically] pushed the timer to fifty-nine minutes before finally escaping (no, seriously!).

After some group photographs in wizard hats and Viking helmets, everyone headed to Coffee Yard for the start of Streethunt Games’ treasure hunt, split into teams named after different fusion facilities. This was a great teambuilding activity as it allowed us to explore the streets of York while playing the part of a private investigator. Along with Katy and Hillary from the YPI Admin team, the students got to explore several landmarks in York such as the Shambles, the Museum Gardens, St Mary’s Abbey and even stumbled across Guy Fawkes’ Inn. Indeed, that pub break was much needed. Once finished, the teams united as one and swarmed Las Iguanas for a delightful dinner and relaxed evening.
Treasure hunting in York
Fast-forward a few months, approaching Christmas, and many of us found ourselves exhausted having been through many intense CDT courses; a week away from all this was due. Good thing that Away Week had arrived. With a limited budget and an entire hostel booked by the YPI admin, the students took it upon themselves to organise some teambuilding down in Beverley. Reconvening late afternoon on a Monday at the YHA Beverley Friary Hostel, the students began to arrive to a large pile of groceries and a lot of bread – courtesy of the Away Week committee going for a big grocery shop to prepare for the meals to come. After having dinner, we didn’t hang around for too long before heading to bed to make sure we were ready for the next day.
During the away week, the students participated in a “design a reactor” game, where they split into teams (such as engineering, diagnostics, economics, etc.) to design a fusion reactor, encompassing power plant and considering costs and timelines. Through a vote, it was decided that the reactor would be a stellarator, and then the tasks were divided between the relevant teams. This activity was spread over several days and the product was a detailed presentation on our homemade reactor, the Superconducting Thermonuclear Advanced Reactor (STAR). Overall, this was a great activity and taught the students the importance of good teamwork within the team and good communication between the different teams.
Although building a reactor was a large part of the Away Week, our itinerary also included a visit to Escape Rooms Beverley, and a leisurely morning stroll exploring the town of Beverley. Some students had searched the hostel and found some chess and checkers boards that sparked some impromptu games that carried on throughout the 4 days. Teams came together in the evening after dinner, kicking back with drinks and swapping stories that ranged from hilarious mishaps to heartwarming moments. A special thanks to the Away Week committee who wonderfully planned all the activities and organised the food – without their efforts this would not have been possible!

The article finishes by looking forward to the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) project, which will be built in Nottinghamshire. Operations should begin in the 2040s.

We’re pleased to announce that the second Fusion Industry School is now open for registrations.
The Fusion Industry School is a 2-week interactive programme of lectures from world-leading experts in fusion, aimed at providing an overview of the current progress and challenges to industry professionals. The school consists of lectures, networking sessions, panel discussions and Q&As as well as visits to the UKAEA national fusion facilities.
The first week (19th – 22nd June) takes place in York and has an emphasis on the underpinning fusion science and technology. The second week (25th – 28th September) is in Oxfordshire and will build on this first week, emphasising more the engineering applications.

In weeks 4 to 6 of the autumn term, the Fusion CDT first years from all the partner universities came together for three weeks of lectures at York Plasma Institute. The first week also included a cohort building afternoon. Ethan Attwood (a first year Fusion CDT student from University of York) reported back on the teambuilding event as follows:
It’s natural to have felt increasingly disconnected from your peers ever since the calendar turned to 2020. After two years of distancing, remote working, online lectures and cancelled events, this academic year finally feels severed from the last strands of our collective isolation. The events of this autumn will represent a fitting welcome to the CDT cohort of 2022, and a recognition of the fact that once again, we can run around the woods with reckless abandon.
Local Yorkshire events venue Hazlewood castle, with its geometric 11th-century architecture and sprawling grounds, seems an auspicious site for CDT teambuilding. The tipis and shuttered outdoor bars feel more like a site for a fairytale woodland wedding than 25 physics students about to attempt to cooperate. But a fitting venue it was, with activities designed and expertly guided to perfectly toe the boundary between competitive and cooperative, to instil mutual respect for the wider team while knowing deep down that your subgroup was the best. And the reviews corroborated, with comments from the group including:
“The whole day was great fun. Some people got a bit too competitive,” and “The orienteering was actually one of the most fun things I’ve done ever, but don’t put that in or it’ll seem disingenuous”.
A rotation around three activities allowed the teams to flex their competitive muscle: air rifle shooting, archery and a woodland scavenger hunt with riddles to solve. Points in each were up for grabs amongst our three rival squads: the Sausage Links, Pancake Kings and Koki’s Heroes.
It was in fact the introductory exercise that stimulated many of the strongest reactions. While simultaneously lowering a weighted metal rod to the ground with your teammates may sound trivial, it proved anything but. “Our strategy was to yell at each other in unison,” one of the group explained. “Also to identify problematic people and move them to the middle where they could do the least damage,” his teammate added. “Like me.”
Archery ended in a 3-way tie, with Koki’s Heroes marksman Max Stunt (a second year Fusion CDT student and one of our student reps) earning the title via rock-paper-scissors tiebreaker. In less controversial but just as dramatic fashion, Sim Bhaker of the Pancake Kings led the field in air rifle shooting.
The day didn’t end there though, as waiting for us back in York was a meal at ASK Italian organised by Ruth, Ella and Hillary (YPI admin team), who were the real heroes in all of this. The pizza and pasta was washed down with drinks at several stops along York’s incredible trail of pubs. In the end, a day of discovering our ungracefulness at activities mastered by explorer scouts many years our junior came second to speaking to that person you’ve so far only seen in lectures. It was in these conversations that we learned about the cool job they had before they started, or how far they’ve travelled to join the fusion community. We bantered, gossiped, and planned future socials across the home universities of the CDT. We are scientists after all; we like assessments of objectives and in this case, the afternoon at Hazlewood Castle was a resounding success, and we have a stronger cohort for it.

Fusion CDT members from several years engaged in outreach at the Scarborough Science & Engineering Week on the 11th and 12th of October 2022. Local students flocked to the Sundome every 15 minutes to watch introductory videos on fusion energy and participate in live Q&A sessions with CDT volunteers.
Outside of the Sundome, curious students turned to the staffed Fusion CDT booth where they could ask more in-depth questions, have a look at a Lego fusion reactor model and take a shot at operating a reactor themselves by playing Operation Tokamak. With hardly a moment of downtime at either the Sundome or booth, engagement with and enthusiasm for fusion energy was high.
