Linda Dittmar grew up in Israel during its formative years, 1939-1960. Coming to study in the United States, she received her Ph.D from Stanford University and for the next forty years taught literature and film studies at the University of Massachusetts. During that time she also taught at the University of Paris, held two Fulbright grants to India, the latter as Distinguished Chair, and lectured twice at Tel Aviv University. In addition to many articles and book chapters her writing includes the books From Hanoi to Hollywood; The Vietnam War in American Film and Multiple Voices in Feminist Film Criticism. Now Professor Emerita and longtime editorial member of Radical Teacher magazine, she is completing her memoir, “Tracing Homelands,” about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, focusing on the war of 1948. A longer version of the current chapter appears in the Bulletin of Harvard University’s Divinity School. Other excerpts were published in Jewish Currents, Nowhere, and Consequence magazines.
