Cookie「どうしたらもっと強くなれますか?」
= どうしたらもっとつよくなれますか?
= Doushitara motto tsuyoku naremasu ka?
= How can I become stronger?
Yoda「覚えることはまだたくさんある。」
= おぼえることはまだたくさんある。
= Oboeru koto wa mada takusan aru.
= “Much to learn, you still have.”
Hi everyone! I am Cookie.
Today I am going to teach you how to use the potential form in Japanese.
★How to make a potential forms:
verb dictionary form + ことができる ( = koto ga dekiru)/(polite) ことができます = koto ga dekimasu ( = koto ga dekimasu)
Ex. 行くことができる = いくことができる = iku koto ga dekiru = can go
I’ve already made a lesson on the use of 出来る = dekiru. Please click here if you need to review or are seeing this for the first time.
How to use 出来る = できる = dekiru
Now, we are going to learn another potential form.
Compared to ことができる ( = koto ga dekiru), these potential forms are more conversational.
★ru-verb
1) Delete る ( = ru)
→食べ = たべ = tabe
2) Attach られる ( = rareru)
→食べられる = たべられる = taberareru
= to be able to eat /edible
られる = rareru →られた = rareta
*食べられた = たべられた = taberareta
られる = rareru → られない = rarenai
*食べられない = たべられない = taberarenai
= not be able to eat/inedible
Past tense:
られない = rarenai→られなかった = rarenakatta
masu-form (more polite)
1) Delete ます ( = masu)
→食べ = たべ = tabe
2) Attach られます ( = raremasu)
→食べられます = たべられます = taberaremasu
Present Negative form:
られます = raremasu→られません = raremasen
→食べられません = たべらません = taberaremasen
Past Negative form:
られません = raremasen →られませんでした = raremasen deshita.
→食べられませんでした = たべられませんでした= taberaremasendeshita
Note:
The potential form of ru-verb is the same as that of the 受身形 = うけみけい = ukemikei = passive form and the 敬語 = けいご = keigo = honorific form
食べられる = たべられる = taberareru
(potential form)
Ex. ぶどうは皮まで食べられる
= ぶどうはかわまでたべられる
= Budou wa kawa made taberareru
= You can even eat grape skin.
(passive)
Ex. 鮫に食べられないように気をつけて。
= さめにたべられないようにきをつけて。
= Same ni taberarenai you ni ki wo tsukete.
= Be careful not to be eaten by sharks.
(honorific)
Ex. 朝ご飯はもう食べられましたか?
= あさごはんはもうたべられましたか?
= Asagohan wa mou taberaremashita ka?
= Did you already have breakfast?
Note: You can also say
召し上がりましたか? ( = めしがりましたか = meshiagarimashita ka)?
お食べになりましたか? ( = Otabeni narimashita ka)?
Note: ら抜き言葉 ( = ra nuki kotoba), ‘ra’-removed word.
Though it is grammatically wrong and your Japanese teachers would probably correct you right away, I bet you hear many people drop ら ( = ra) in casual conversation, especially among young people or in some regions in Japan.
★ru-verb
食べられる = たべられる = taberareru = can eat/ 食べられない = taberarenai = can’t eat.
→(ら抜き= ra-nuki) 食べれる = たべれる = tabereru = can eat /食べれない = taberenai = can’t eat.
★irregular verb
来られる = こられる = korareru = can come / 来られない = こられない = korarenai = can’t come
→(ら抜き= ra-nuki) 来れる = これる = koreru/来れない = これない = korenai
You only drop ら ( = ra) in potential form and not in passive form or honorific form.
Passive form / Honorific form:
食べられる = たべられる = taberareru・食べられない = たべられない = taberarenai) →You can’t drop ら ( = ra )
★u-verb
→Change the last vowel, “u”, to “e” and attach ”ru”
“u”→”eru”
→読める = よめる = yomeru = to be able to read, can read
masu-form:
→(masu form) 読めます = よめます = yomemasu
Present Negative form:
Change the last vowel, “u”, to “e” and attach “ない = nai”
“u”→ ”enai”
→読めない = よめない = yomenai = can’t read
→(masu form) 読めません = よめません = yomemasen
Past Negative form:
ない = nai →なかった = nakatta
→読めなかった = よめなかった = yomenakatta = couldn’t read
→(masu form) 読めませんでした = よめませんでした = yomemasen deshita
(Note: You can also attach です ( = desu) after a casual form 読めなかったです = yomenakatta desu)
★Irregular
→来られる = こられる = korareru = to be able to come
(negative form) 来られない = こられない = korarenai
(Masu form) 来られません = こられません = koraremasen
Negative form:
出来ない/できない = dekinai / (masu form) 出来ません/できません = dekimasen = can’t do
Past tense:
出来た/できた = dekita / (masu form) 出来ました/できました = dekimashita = could do
Past negative:
出来なかった/できなかった= dekinakatta / (masu form) 出来ませんでした/できませんでした = dekimasen deshita = couldn’t do
Note 1) When you see/hear things naturally without your will, you don’t use the potential form.
Ex. この部屋からきれいな海が見えます。
= このへやからきれいなうみがみえます。
= Kono heya kara kireina umi ga miemasu.
= You can see the beautiful ocean from this room.
Note: You use the particle が ( = ga) with an object. Not を ( = wo).
X 海を見えます = うみをみえます = umi wo miemasu (wrong)
Ex. 後ろの席だったのでステージがよく見えなかった。
= うしろのせきだったのでステージがよくみえなかった。
= Ushiro no seki datta node suteeji ga yoku mienakatta.
= I sat at the back so I couldn’t see the stage well.
Ex. A: 「すみません、画面が小さくて見えないのでもう少し大きくしてもらえますか?」
= すみません、がめんがちいさくてみえないのでもうすこしおおきくしてもらえますか?
= Sumimasen, gamen ga chiisakute mienai node mousukoshi ookiku shite moraemasu ka?
= I am sorry. The screen is so small and I can’t see well. Can you make the screen bigger?
B: 「これでどうですか?」(Enlarging the screen)
= Kore de dou desu ka?
= How about now?
A: 「よく見えます。有難うございます。」
= よくみえます。ありがとうございます。
= Yoku miemasu. Arigatou gozaimasu.
= I can see well now. Thank you!
(On the phone)
Ex. 「聞こえますか?」
= きこえますか?
= Kikoemasu ka?
= Can you hear me?
「電波が悪くて、聞こえません」
= でんぱがわるくて、きこえません。
= Denpa ga warukute, kikoemasen.
= The connection is so bad that I can’t hear you well.
But if you try to intentionally listen or see something, you use the potential form.
Ex. 恥ずかしくてマギーの顔が見られません。
= はずかしくてマギーのかおがみられません。
= Hazukashikute Maggie no kao ga miraremasen.
= I am too embarrassed to look at your face, Maggie.
Ex. その映画はネトフリでも見られるよ。
= そのえいがはネトフリでもみられるよ。
= Sono eiga wa Netofuri demo mirareru yo.
= You can watch that movie on Netflix, too.
Note: ネトフリ = netofuri is an abbreviation of ネットフリックス = Nettofurikkusu = Netflix
Ex. このアプリで世界中のポッドキャストが聞けます。
= このアプリでせかいじゅうのポッドキャストがきけます。
= Kono apuri de sekaijuu no poddokyasuto ga kikemasu.
= You can listen to Podcasts around the world with this app.
Ex. 東京ではそのラジオ番組は聞けません。
= とうきょうではそのラジオばんぐみはきけません。
= Toukyou dewa sono rajio bangumi wa kikemasen.
= We can’t listen to the radio program in Tokyo.
Note 2) the verbs ある = aru / いる = iru = to be/to exist/ there is/are
You can’t change these to potential forms:
Ex. 机の上に本があります。
= つくえのうえにほんがあります。
= Tsukue no ue ni hon ga arimasu.
= There is a book on the desk.
Ex. マギーは日本にいます。
= マギーはにほんにいます。
= Maggie wa nihon ni imasu.
= Maggie is in Japan.
However, when you are talking about the possibility that something might happen or might be possible, you can say
あり得る = ありうる/ありえる = ariuru/arieru
Ex. 飛行機がキャンセルになることもあり得る。
= ひこうきがキャンセルになることもありうる/える。
= Hikouki ga kyanseru ni naru koto mo ariuru/eru.
= It is possible./There is a chance that the flight might be canceled.
Note 3) Intransitive verbs without wills: There are no potential forms.
Ex. 雨が降る = あめがふる = Ame ga furu = It rains
→X No potential forms
Ex. 鍵が見つかる = かぎがみつかる = Kagi ga mitsukaru = the key is found
→X No potential forms
Ex. 時間がかかる = じかんがかかる = Jikan ga kakaru = to take (time)
→X No potential forms
Ex. ドアが開く = ドアがあく = doa ga aku = the door opens
→X No potential forms
Note 4) The verbs such as わかる ( = wakaru) and 知る ( = shiru )
There are no potential forms with
わかる = wakaru = to understand/know/tell
知る = しる = shiru = to know
However, you can make a potential form with できる ( = dekiru)
verb (dictionary form) こと ( koto) + が ( = ga) + できる (= dekiru)
知ることができる
= しることができる
= shiru koto ga dekiru
= to be able to know
Note 5) What particle to use with an object.
When you bring up a topic or show the contrast, you use は ( = wa)
Ex. この漢字は読めます。
= このかんじはよめます。
= Kono kanji wa yomemasu.
= I can read this kanji. (Showing the contrast: I may not be able to read other kanji but I can read this one. )
Ex. この漢字は読めますか?
= このかんじはよめますか?
= Kono kanji wo yomemasu ka?
=1) (As for this kanji) Can you read it?
2) Can you read this kanji? (Showing the contrast: Checking if someone can read other kanji and then ask them if they can read this kanji.)
Ex. 料理はできますか?
= りょうりはできますか?
= Ryouri wa dekimasu ka?
= Can you cook? (bringing up the topic, 料理 = りょうり = ryorui = cooking)
Ex. この漢字が読めます。(more common)
= このかんじがよめます。
= Kono kanji ga yomemasu.
= I can read this kanji.
Ex. この漢字を読めます。
= このかんじをよめます。
= Kono kanji wo yomemasu.
Note: Though you hear people use を ( = wo) as an object marker with potential form, が ( = ga) is more common.
Let’s see the nuance difference:
Ex. この漢字が読めますか? (more common)
= このかんじがよめますか?
= Kono kanji ga yomemasu ka?
= Can you read this kanji?
︎Focusing on “this kanji”
Ex. この漢字を読めますか?
= このかんじをよめますか?
= Kono kanji wo yomemasu ka?
︎Focusing on whether the listener can read this kanji or not.
Be careful! You don’t use を ( = wo) with できます ( = dekimasu) / できません ( = dekimasen)
Ex. 料理ができますか?
= りょうりができますか?
= Ryouri ga dekimasu ka?
= Can you cook?
料理をできますか? (not natural)
= りょうりをできますか?
= Ryouri wo dekimasu ka?
Ex. はい、料理ができます。
= はい、りょうりができます。
= Hai, ryouri ga dekimasu.
= Yes, I can cook.
料理をできます。(not natural)
= りょうりをできます。
= Ryouri wo dekimasu.
Ex. いいえ、料理ができません。
= いいえ、りょうりができません。
= Iie, ryouri ga dekimasen.
= No, I can’t cook.
料理をできません。(not natural)
= りょうりをできません。
= Ryouri wo dekimasen.
Note 6) What particle to use after a subject.
When it is clear who you are talking about, you omit the subject.
Ex. A: 「明日会える?」
= あしたあえる?
= Ashita aeru?
= Can you see me tomorrow?
B: 「うん、会えるよ。」
= うん、あえるよ。
= Un, aeru yo.
= Yeah, I can (see you).
A: 「じゃあ、7時にうちに来られる?」
= じゃあ、しちじにうちにこられる?
= Jaa, shichiji ni uchi ni koreru?
= OK, then can you come over at 7:00?
B: 「7時は行けないけど、8時だったら行けるよ。」
= しちじはいけないけど、はちじだったらいけるよ。
= Shichiji wa ikenai kedo, hachiji dattara ikeru yo.
= I can’t go there at 7:00, but I can at 8:00.
I won’t go into too much detail here, but when you stress the subject, you use particles such as
は ( = wa) / に ( = ni) (in a question) / も ( = mo) also/ にも ( = nimo) also, even /でも ( = demo) also, even /なら ( = nara) If it’s someone / だけ ( = dake) only
には ( = niwa) / しか ( = shika) only/ だけしか ( = dakeshika)/だけでは ( = dakedewa) not just ~, etc. depending on the context.
Ex. この曲は難しいからマギーには弾けないよ。
= このきょくはむずかしいからマギーにはひけないよ。
= Kono kyoku wa muzukashii kara Maggie niwa hikenai yo.
= This song is so difficult for you that you won’t be able to play it, Maggie.
Note: You only use には ( = niwa) / にも ( = nimo) / でも ( = demo) when you are talking about one’s ability not one’s availability.
Ex. 明日、私は出かけられません。
= あした、わたしはでかけられません。
= Ashita watashi wa dekakeraremasen.
= I can’t go out tomorrow.
→ X 明日、私には出かけられません。(wrong)
= あした、わたしにはでかけられません。
= Ashita, watashi niwa dekakeraremasen.

= Kono kyoku wa watashi nimo/demo hikeru.
= Even I can play this song.
Ex. この曲は彼しか弾けない。
= このきょくはかれしかひけない。
= Kono kyoku wa kare shika hikenai.
= Only he can play this song.
Ex. マギーなら弾けるよ。

= わたしはひけるけど、マギーはひけないでしょ。
= Watashi wa hikeru kedo, Maggie wa hikenai desho.
= I can play it, but you won’t be able to play it, Maggie.
(Showing the contrast between 私 = わたし = watashi and マギー = Maggie )

= Sounano. Jitsu wa kanazuchi nanda.
