Over the course of his 70-year career, Williams has written the scores and/or themes to hundreds of films, earning an amazing 54 Oscar nominations along the way. (He’s won five times.) He had a Top 10 pop hit with the main title theme from Star Wars back in 1977, and his music has been featured in all of the Star Wars films, but Williams’s most enduring partnership may well be with Steven Spielberg. Three of Williams’s Oscar wins came from Spielberg’s movies — Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler’s List — and they’ve worked together on several other films, including all of the Indiana Jones movies, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, and Lincoln. Spielberg, who’s one of the executive producers on a new documentary, Music by John Williams, talked about why Williams has been his first choice to score nearly every movie he’s ever made.
