Also in the same hemisphere we get the new album from our well know favorites, The Volcanics from Perth. Another two heavy favs, American Sharks from Austin and Valley of The Sun over in Cincy are represented with new tracks. Quarter century ago 91.1 KLSU FM in Baton Rouge allowed me to impose my musical taste to the local audience every Saturday morning. A few months ago I got in touch with one of the KLSU Saturday DJs, Mike the Distortionist who has a cool radio show called The Fuzz on the current KLSU schedule. Thanks to him, I got to be back on the same frequency. We collaborated on a 60s garage rock playlist from non-western countries, shared our love for Minutemen and Dead Milkmen, talked about my time at LSU and how and why I support XCSB.

Wim Wenders had a movie called “Three American LPs”. Today’s show is about a different set of three American albums that came in 1984. It’s incredible that those are three consecutive releases by one label (SST), in one year and two of them came out as double albums on a same day. Yet, these three are probably the greatest albums of the American underground rock and in my personal opinion, quite possibly three best albums in the entire history of rock’n’roll. At least, such was the influence on the little old me. Today we hear three 20ish minute excerpts from each of those albums and then we explore some covers that other bands made as a tribute to the songs from these three albums. Actually, it’s really strange that there’s not more covers of the songs from this album, given how much they mean to many people who enjoyed exactly 40 years ago. John Mayall was one of the musicians I had a deepest respect for. He had a career that spanned 60 years and he was always relevant. He had a nose and ear for talent and the list of names that passed through his Bluesbreakers is nothing short of impressive. From his blues laments, through concept albums about his youth and life, fantastic live albums, incredible Memphis and New Orleans albums all the way to his last album which found it’s way to our year end list, John never released a dud. And he worked virtually until his last year. John Mayall leaves a deep void behind. John Mayall not only left a mark on rock’n’roll and blues. He is a thread in this fabric without which it just wouldn’t hold together the same way. This is an hour long tribute to Mayall and it contains music only from the first 10 years of his career. Other 50 years were sparser with releases, but always strong. Checking out what’s new with Mayall was always exciting and now all we can do is admire his legacy.

Most of the artists we feature today gravitate around the University of Lafayette in Louisiana. This is a place dedicated for preservation of cajun and zydeco culture in Louisiana, and a place where many musicians happily experiment with their French-spoken heritage. So, today, we feature Corey Ledet with his new record, Louis Michot with his solo record and a gorgeous album with Lost Bayou Ramblers and Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Ann Savoy gathered her recording in the last couple of years and had them published by Smithsonian. A bunch of bands from several parishes around Lafayette recorded really fun French versions of classic rock songs, and that’s also scattered around the playlist. Louisiana heritage isn’t just cultivated in one small area of Louisiana, but all around the world. So we check out new music from Joe Le Taxi in Wales, Baton Rouge’s Le Roux covered CCR, The Carnivals joined forces with Becky Lynn Blanca to sing about New Orleans and Robert Finley plays his swamp blues up in the North of Louisiana.

Džuboks was a monthly entertainment magazine focusing on rock and pop music that featured a 6″ flexi record inserted inside in an envelope. There was 16 flexies total between 1967 and 1968. Those were incredibly important in Yugoslavia with circulation cca hundred thousands and each contained contemporary hit from the US and UK rock and pop charts of the moment. They were very well done, fully licensed and they still sound great and most songs are truly some of the greatest written in that period. They were pressed by Jugoton and the publisher used the records to advertise their normal vinyl releases on 7″ and 12″ records. Influence on the local readership and scene in Yugoslavia was immeasurable. To fill up the rest of the hour, I included three greatest Yugo rock originals from that period and I’m closing with two Polish postcard records. My Džuboks flexies are in great condition and my Polish postcards are were heavily damaged. Yet all are extremely charming and I’m playing them directly from the sources.

Guitarist of MC5, Wayne Kramer passed away of pancreatic cancer on February 2nd. Singer of Jeff Beck Group, The Gass and Hummingbird, Bobby Tench passed away on February 19th. Denny Laine who was a founding member of The Moody Blues and played with Paul McCartney in Wings passed away on December 5th last year. Dex Romweber of Flat Duo Jets passed away on Februay 16h. Mojo Nixon died on February 7th. Scott Kempner who was in Dictators, Del Lords and Brandos passed away on November 29th last year. The last one we pay tribute to this time is Melanie, who passed away on January 23rd.

My coming out of age decade is the 80s. But we can all safely objectively admit that the best rock music came out between 1965 and 1975. Two of the strongest creators in that period left the planet recently within a week from each other. Legendary guitarist of Yardbirds Jeff Beck and founder of The Byrds David Crosby. Both left an permanent mark in the history of popular music. Beck as a guitarist and Crosby as a vocalist and songwriter. We merely use this sad moment to just take back the clock and listen to some music from the period when rock was truly innovative and fresh. Excuse my US vinyl for the Yardbirds, but that’s how it came out back then in glorious fake “electronically enhanced” stereo.

Contemporary rockers like to go back to the old songs and make covers. It’s been like that since the earliest days of rock’n’roll. Pandemic lockdowns have forced musicians to stay home and pause their tours. In confinement, many found inspiration in old songs. Today’s show is just a mere selection to illustrate this phenomenon. We continue our list of best albums in 2022 and reveal the best albums. All top five records are extremely catchy and favor hooks to pretention. Gyasi gets an LP vinyl release for the first time on Bomp label, known for its catchiness through out the history of rock’n’roll. Vitus Mataré and John Rosewall continue with Petrified Max project and keep cranking high quality music from year to year. Joey Rubbish of Chicago’s Rubs leaves no filler on his hook laden album Dust. Alicja Trout gets together with Sweet Knives and delivers a jewel of an album with a good mix of guitars, bubblegum and synthesizers. But the most complete album this year is in my opinion brought to us by the New Zealand outfit Best Bets. On An Unhistoric Night is a fun record without much pretention, but a fantastic flow that would likely make it a classic in years to come. The rest of the list is pretty great as well and features 3rd Secret, Aoife O’Donovan, Harlan T. Bobo, Jack Broadbent, The Americans, Ghost Woman, Tony Molina, Gentleman Jesse and multiple entries by David Nance. Check it out!

Sad news came to us on Tuesday that Mark Lanegan passed away. Today’s show is entirely dedicated to him and it contains my recording of his entire Cleveland show on November 5th 2014. He ended up liking the recording and a part of that recording was published it as an LP High, Wild and Free. Over in Europe we check out Komodor from France and Roman Aul and Rosarys from Germany, who did a new record collaborating with the legendary Detroit producer Jim Diamond. Last year we started our year-end review of best albums that we heard in the past year. This week we head positions 14 to 1. For the number one this year I chose Californian band Cool Ghouls. After several delightful garage rock records, last year they took a huge leap and made a fantastic genre spanning record that shows good taste, measure and expert knowledge of rock’n’roll history. One song will remind you of Beach Boys, other on Todd Rundgren, another one of Byrds, Love, Leonard Cohen… approach seems deliberate and result is stunning album. In a post-post-post modern post-capitalist world an this album looks like a conveyor belt in which best moments of the past roll by one by one, perfectly strung together until the final product comes out. They do their recycling shamelessly and proudly. It’s paradoxically original. It’s an art form. And we love it here.
