Research conducted by the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) in November 2021 showed that 60% of schools only managed to cover about 30% of the written work in 2021. Yet, even with the trimmed curriculum, the majority of learners struggled to complete half of the exercises in the DBE recommended mathematics workbooks in the Foundation Phase. Rotational timetabling has not helped either. It has proven to be inefficient and has, instead, taken away the learning time for most of our learners. Thus, as we ready ourselves for any eventuality in the ailing 022 academic calendars, NECT calls for things to be done differentlY. We speak to Dhianaraj chetty who is the Lead Researcher at NECT.
