Electroconvulsive therapy causes a generalized tonic clonic seizure by electrical stimulation of the brain. Cerebral blood flow and metabolism increase dramatically. From a cardiovascular standpoint, there is an initial parasympathetic surge (primarily during the electrical stimulation) with severe bradycardia or asystole.
