Now in it's fifth year, the foundation has provided thousands of dollars for local projects that are voted on by the "PHIL" members who donate to the group. The money is pooled to be able to provide assets for various projects in Nevada and Vernon County.

Nevada Fire Chief, Taylor McKlintic joins Mike Harbit to discuss the arrival of the new tornado sirens for the city of Nevada to replace the older siren system. At a cost of about $300,000, Chief McKlintic talked about what the new system will provide in terms of upgrades and protection. The installation process is expected to begin in October.

Today on Update, I am talking with Dr. Stephanie Niles, President of Cottey College in Nevada. Dr. Niles will be highlighting several exciting changes to Cottey this Fall. First, they will be implementing a four-term academic year. Fall Semester consists of a two-week mini term, followed by a seven-week course. This schedule is repeated during the Spring Semester. Today on Update, I will be talking with Trooper Anthony Calderon of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Kansas traffic deaths are up 30% from last year. Trooper Calderon will explain why there are more fatalities this year. He says it is due to more motorists looking at screens, instead of paying attention to the road. He also says impaired driving has contributed to the 207 deaths already this year in Kansas. Driving impaired can be due to drugs, alcohol or lack of sleep. Finally, Trooper Calderon will tell us how to be good, defensive drivers in the midst of inattentive motorists.
