Today's Focus : Physical Disabilities
FACTS:
According to 2017 data from the Statistics Canada survey of Canadians with disabilities, it is estimated that 2 170 000 Canadians live with a disability that affects their level of pain, flexibility or mobility.
Many conditions can cause permanent physical disabilities for people; some common ones that children may have are:
Cerebral Palsy
Spina Bifida
Muscular Dystrophy
Spinal Cord Injuries
This fact sheet explains many of the statistics and realities of living with a disability. Of note is the cost for people to purchase wheelchairs, other mobility devices and to make a home accessible for different mobility needs.

The book Wonder by R.J. Palacio tells the beautiful story of Auggie, a 10-year old boy born with a genetic condition. His physical difference is that he lives with a facial deformity. This short video describes the world from the main character’s perspective.
Meet Cassie in this video, she is a five year old girl who lives with the same genetic condition as Auggie.
