Justin Smith is a recognised voice from Australian talkback radio as well as writing opinion pieces in print and appearing on TV.

Now he’s turned fact to fiction, writing his first novel Babies of the Rose, which centres on three different characters whose lives intersect at Anzac Day while watching the dawn service at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance.

Each of them carries trauma from battles - some from service in overseas conflicts - and they are looking for peace within.

I spoke to Justin about how he drew on his extensive experience in news radio and covering Anzac Day services overseas at Gallipoli in Turkey and Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan to produce this debut novel.
