With one in four South Africans facing the risk of being diagnosed with cancer, it’s probable that we all know or knew someone that has walked the cancer journey. The first Sunday of June each year marks a celebration for all cancer survivors with international Cancer Survivor Day. So, who is a cancer survivor and why should we celebrate? Shaun Harris who aims to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games to honour his cancer journey and all those South African Cancer survivors shares his story with us. Often, it is the stories of these individuals that provide inspiration for other cancer survivors. Today, Shaun is the Voice of Cancer Ambassador. Campaigning for Cancer is an advocacy organisation committed to encouraging and supporting cancer survivors in sharing their stories through its Voice of Cancer Programme. Lauren Pretorius is the CEO of “Campaigning for Cancer” and she talks to us about the stigma and myths about cancer. Cancer has received low priority for health care services in sub-Saharan Africa. The reason is, undoubtedly, the overwhelming burden of communicable diseases, as illustrated by the proportions of deaths by major categories. Cancer is not a rare disease in Africa. Yet, the facilities for providing treatment for cancer cases in most of Africa are minimal. An African Cancer Institute at the Stellenbosch University was launched in 2013.
