This week’s teaching picks back up in Chapter 3 after a brief review from last week’s lesson. Verse 3 begins with Moses’s perception of reality being challenged as he encounters God through the burning bush.  It’s difficult when thrown into a wilderness experience to put aside our perceptions of reality, which are often based on how we are raised, our culture, or our past experiences.  Scripture tells us Moses  “turned aside” (detours off his normal path) to look at why the bush was not consumed. God appears to Moses through fire, which interestingly is a distinct way that God describes Himself in the scriptures. In a fascinating discussion, Jayme presents the use of fire in scripture as a term of comparison to describe God while also taking a look at the qualities of fire.  The holiness of God should have consumed Moses but we see through Moses’s encounter with the angel of the LORD that it is only possible for man to encounter God through the presence of the Mediator, Jesus Christ.
