Architizer's One Drawing Challenge 2019 winner Caleb Ong is a good friend of mine who practice architecture in his hometown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we talked about his design process for his winning entry The Unending Square with bits of sharing of experiences about life in our cities during covid, Christmas in Malaysia and PH, Ken Yeang, etc. We could've talked longer but I guess other stuffs can be booked for another episode. Background: Caleb Ong is a Malaysian-based architectural designer working to being further specialized in architecture. He works with client (mostly architect at the moment) by providing creative architectural design idea and solution to achieve the client's business and personal goals. He is currently working with Ar.Lee Cherng Yih of Formzero on design and construction of three design-intensive bungalow projects, while at the same time participating in competitions, partaking freelance or personal research projects in collaboration with other architects and designers such as Axial Design Works and HWA!. At the same time, he is running Caleb Ong Design, a small architectural design studio that is formed in October 2018, working on his personal research project. His main goal at the moment is to be a licensed Architect under the Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia while continuing to deepen his expertise in architectural design and further refine his design philosophy.
Caleb Ong has completed his Master in Architecture at Taylor’s University in 2018. Caleb accumulated two years of working experience under Dr. Ken Yeang at T. R. Hamzah & Yeang Sdn. Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. Born in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur, his passion lies among the many aspects of art and design idea creation. His worldview is that everybody has a right to believe in what they want to believe and to think about what they want to think. Caleb is stimulated in the different point of views between the various field of people and is always looking forward to learning, collaborate and provide with others in the endeavor of bettering the world. His inner compass orientates himself towards the realm of ideation that takes risk among the unexplored real and fictional worlds that often produces an unpredictable result.
