Drowning In Your Eyes was the only song from the original 1986 line-up of The Ug Brothers to make it onto a stage, as George was never able to play Mouse Art to Graham's satisfaction in 1986 and the band never took that particular tune to the stage during their second odyssey, which was a shame. Drowning In Your Eyes was in fact the song that The Ug Brothers played first at their first show, at the Cavern in Exeter, on Christmas Eve in 1994. Being the sole survivor from before, it seemed like the obvious thing to do.

It was a famous and auspicious performance as the band had already developed a considerable reputation and the venue probably exceeded its fire regulation quota by a factor of three or four, the place was absolutely crammed full of revelers. When The Ug Brothers took to the stage, the whole place went crazy. Honey Sucks, who were performing later, were somewhat disgruntled as the venue emptied soon after The Ug Brothers finished their set, leaving them playing to a rather sad and empty hall.

These recordings of instrumentals – or Ugstrumentals – by The Ug Brothers were made at Graham’s flat in Fore Street, Exeter, above the Real McCoy Arcade during the late winter of 1994/5. They are most of the set of The Ug Brothers, including various pieces that were never performed live due to having had no lyrics written for them.

There are no vocals as Natalie was not there on the occasions that these Ugstrumentals were recorded. The idea was to have something to listen to and work on with a view to creating lyrics, and also as a karaoke tape for Natalie to sing along to when practising. Few further lyrics were forthcoming as things turned out. These Ugstrumental pieces still sound wonderful and full of interesting musical ideas. The concept of Ugstrumental pieces such as these was later developed by the Flicker project.
