Research on social issues plays an important role in informing public opinion thus, it needs to be accurate at all times. The Institute of Race Relations indicated that protests in South Africa have increased by 96% since 2010. However, Africa Check disputes this inference. According to Africa Check this conclusion was based on police data which has a number of limitations, one of them being the fact that “unrest-related incidents” recorded by the police cannot be uniformly assumed to mean “protests.” We hear from the IRR as to why it stands by their research results and Africa Check as to why they think these results cannot be true. Our guests were Gabriela Mackay- Researcher, Institute of Race Relations (Gabriela calculated and authored the fast facts report on social protests) and Mina Demian, Researcher from Africa Check.

On Nelson Mandela day the NPO swayed away from the traditional way that most people would normally spend their 67 minutes. Through its 67 Minds initiative it asked Gauteng businessmen and women to ‘donate’ their brains not their brawn so that it would gain access to intellectual capital it ordinarily cannot afford, to get a new perspective on community development and sustainability issues that confound it on a daily basis. What came out of the think tank sessions and how will the NPO utilise this knowledge to better its organisation?
