A second appeal for the release of American Pastor Andrew Brunson, has been denied by a court in Izmir where Brunson operated a small Protestant church and ministry for more than 23 years.

US officials maintain there is no credible evidence against Brunson, arrested in 2016 following a failed coup on charges of espionage and having links to terrorist groups. The Trump administration has negotiated to secure his release since he was moved from prison to house arrest in July.

Brunson, who faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted, has always maintained his innocence. His trial is set to resume in October.
