Christians in China report the country is waging the most severe systematic suppression of Christianity in the country since religious freedom was written into the Chinese constitution in 1982.

President Xi Jinping is enforcing policy to “Sinicize” all the nation’s religions by infusing them with “Chinese characteristics” such as replacing images of Jesus or of the cross with images of Xi and a Chinese flag.

This year, a five-year plan to “Sinicize” Christianity was introduced, along with new rules on religious affairs. Hundreds of “house churches” have been shuttered, Bibles have been seized, faith leaders imprisoned and congregants interrogated and intimidated by local authorities. Children are not allowed to attend worship services and parents are not allowed to teach their children their faith.

The Communist party has long been suspicious of Christianity because of its affiliation with Western values.
