Romans 12:5-6 — The character of the unity of the body of Christ is determined by the nature of the church. There is a unity of the Spirit, and this unity is intended to be visible. As Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains from Romans 12:5-6, there must be a fundamental agreement of basic doctrine. The body was created for a purpose and we ought to function in this most appropriate manner. The church ought to be active and acting. A dead church is a paradox, and not functioning as God purposed in His creation. One of our dangers is to try and act on our own in independence of Him. Learn of the great lessons we all need to hear. We can organize activities, but we cannot organize a revival where converts are added. Only the Spirit can add to the body. Beware of the tendency towards the sins of activism and of hyper-introspection. Look at the present position of the church. We cannot continue on in our own activities, we must conform to the mind and Spirit of the head Himself. We must recognize our oneness and interdependence. There is value as we contribute to the “object and purpose of the whole”. Be ready to act immediately when the command comes to you.
